The news in the link above about the new caludrons and new damage to the glacier is very important. It's exactly the type of thing you'd expect to see in the run up to an eruption at Katla.

If I was to guess I'd say months rather than years at this stage.

I caught the end of Richard Hammond's Journey to the Centre of the Earth last night. Brilliant stuff but can't find a repeat in the TV schedule or much online to point you to. Next week, it's Journey to the Bottom of the Sea. Should be very good too. I suppose soon enough it'll be repeated ad nauseam.

There was another small harmonic tremor last night at Katla. A small glacial flood followed this but didn't cause any problems.

Nothing very dramatic but it just proves that activity is still going on and a close eye needs to be kept on it.

Last night conductivity increased in the river Múlakvísl. The Iceland Meteorological office and the Public Safety division of the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police are following the situation closely according to mbl.is. Just before midnight there was some unrest in Mýrdalsjökull glacier, site of the volcano Katla, and conductivity continued to increase faster than before.

The Met lost connection with a gauge measuring water level for about an hour. For safety reasons the road was closed at Mýrdalssandur for an hour until the connection was fixed and the situation was deemed safe. The area is under continued surveillance.

Loads of small earthquakes today, some in another area to the north as well.

Let's hope the volcano Krafla doesn't erupt, people will get mixed up with Krafla and Katla at the same time that Katia (which was the replacement name after Katrina) is in the news.

Yep there has been a few minor swarms, nothing major though, but just shows that Katla is still rumbling on her way to her next eruption, whenever that will be.

Iceland’s Volcano Katla under Close Observation

Increased geothermal heat and seismic activity below Mýrdalsjökull glacier in south Iceland, which covers the volcano Katla, might indicate an upcoming eruption and scientists are closely monitoring the volcano. However, it is not certain that an eruption is imminent.

Geophysicist Magnús Tumi Gudmundsson went on an observation flight over Mýrdalsjökull yesterday. “There is always uncertainty regarding Katla and therefore it was considered necessary to fly across the glacier to shed a light on what is going on,” he told Fréttabladid.

He noted that calderas and cracks in the glacier clearly showed increased geothermal heat and regular series of minor earthquakes also indicate that the volcano has been expanding recently.

Gudmundsson pointed out that there is only one definite indication that an eruption in Katla is coming up. “All sources of Katla eruptions in the past 500 years mention large earthquakes that can clearly be found in Mýrdalur [by Vík] a few hours before the eruption begins. That is in fact the only absolute warning.”

There was some seismic activity below Mýrdalsjökull yesterday but this morning it seemed to have subsided. The glacial river Múlakvísl also flooded but the water level peaked yesterday evening and the water flow has since decreased, ruv.is reports.

The calderas which caused the flood in Múlakvísl in July are unchanged but Gudmundsson said there is a new depression in the icecap to the south of them which indicate increased geothermal heat.

He added there is no clear reason for yesterday’s earthquakes. According to ruv.is, scientists believe water may have caused the tremors, although they were weaker than those that preceded the flood in Múlakvísl last summer.

Since the flood in July approximately 800 minor earthquakes have been registered in the area, compared to 300 last year. Gudmundsson iterated there is full reason to be prepared for an eruption but these series of events won’t necessarily lead to one.

The last large volcanic eruption in Katla occurred in 1918.

Katla is quiet again this morning, tremor had earthquakes have dropped back down but there are indications of recent inflation. The main thing to look out for is big earthquakes, unless you start seeing a series of 3+ maybe even 4+ earthquakes happening all of a sudden then there is no point looking at the webcam.
