I don't know why people complain about people not supporting the team, the team has to have a lot of responsibility to get people behind them, in the early 90s the whole county was behind the footballers, there was a massive Clare crown in Croke Park for the League semi's in 93, hopefully last Saturday will be the catalyst to getting people behind them

I would estimate the crowd was around 8/900 and most of them were Down supporters.

I was on the far side (the standing stand :D), the stand looked full to me as well as a good crowd around the side, if there were 2938 the night before, there was the same today, maybe less.
    Apparently the crowd was 1,600

If I was going straight to the game I guess around 5.30 would be plenty of time to be sure of a good spot.
Im not going tomo night, but there is no way on earth you will get close to Pearse stadium if you leave Ennis @ 5.30pm. there will be 1,000s of cars looking for the same spot. leave Ennis @ 4.30pm max! if you want to park your car and see the start of the game. salthill is a nighmare for parking.

I'm more of a football (soccer) fan than a GAA fan, but watching the GAA show of Clare against Galway in '99 has for some reason brought back memories and infuriated me of Offaly the previous year. It boils my piss just thinking about it, we were robbed of an All-Ireland that year. Why wasn't Jimmy Cooney just allowed to re-start the match at 68 minutes when he realised a mistake was made (after the Offaly supporters were cleared off the pitch of course). We were definitely going to win, no question - Barry Murphy was in a very scorable position to put 4 between the sides just a second prior to the 'full-time' whistle being blown. GGRRRRRRRRR!!!

    Oh last night nostalgia *sighs*

Ya but the west Clare crowd constantly harp on about football being better than hurling. Then, when they meet the AI finalists in Championship in their own backyard they couldnt be arsed travelling a few miles to support them. I think Joe is right-theyre a bit of a disgrace.Simple as that.

Clare stupidly agreed to a replay.Offaly should have been out that year simple as that. Its not like we have the chance to win All Irelands every year(or decade,or century).

Yeah, should've done a Meath alright.

Most of the country hated clare already after the munster final that year.

I really don't want to start a debate on something that happened 13 years ago, but Clare didn't have a choice but to agree to a refixture, the first replay was deemed a non-fixture so technically never existed, hence Dooley wasn't suspended for nearly cutting Forde in half. The GAA said that the game could not be fulfilled because of outside issues (Offaly supporters on the pitch). The GAA also had decided to donate all the proceeds of the "3rd" game to the Omagh Fund, which meant if Clare objected they would have been hated even more. The last thing to remember is that Clare should have beaten Offaly the first day and had them beaten the second day, with Lohan definitely coming back and a supposed deal done to have Lynch back, Clare weren't looking at playing another match but getting ready for an All Ireland final. It is often said that Loughnane won us 2 All Ireland's but cost us a third :)

Some rule changes happened as a direct result of the second game however, the ref changes for a replay (before it was the same ref) as well as the board signalling the amount of time left.

I know a lot of people outside of Clare don't realise why we have such a bee in our bonnet about 98, but we put on an exhibition of hurling against Cork (beating them by 8 points I think), took a very good Waterford team for granted in the Munster final, had a player suspended with absolutely no evidence against him, had a game blown up early, had appeals thrown out, we really thought the whole world was against us. It took us 3 years to do what it took Tipp, have the whole country hate us :p

Back to this evenings game, that is a very good Galway team that is out, hopefully the weather will hold for the evening and it'll be a good game of hurling, whichever team wins will learn a lot about themselves after tonight.

I'm not from Clare, but I understand completely. That Clare team were at their peak and clearly the best in the country - the performance against Cork was ridiculously good. I'd never seen anything like it.
I don't want to get into ancient history either, but suffice to say ye were the victims of an epic robbery. And the hate was very much undeserved too. Waterford more than played their part there.

And to rub salt in the wound, a team that lost, not once, but twice goes on to lift the trophy. Most undeserving champions ever.
My sweetest memory in hurling was the following year's Leinster final when KK put 5 goals past them and beat them out the gate. All-Ireland champions me arse!

Duignan comes across as too cocky for my liking. He would do well to show more modesty like the part when Pilkington was mentioned having a chat with Daly.

I genuinely believe we can beat Galway today. We faded out of the Championship last season, but if we can take Galway's scalp this evening it will put us on the right path.

It may well be tougher than the Tipp match, as Galway seem to have everyone against them.. even their own seem to think we can beat them! It will be a major test, but if we come out all guns blazing we can panic Galway.

    Hon the BANNER!

    Clare team for Galway:

    P Brennan, P Vaughan, C Dillon, C Cooney, P O'Connor, P Donnellan, J McInerney, J Clancy, N O'Connell, J Conlon, F Lynch, D McMahon, C McInerney, C Morey, C McGrath

A fair beating tonight. Full back line was under a fair bit of pressure and buckled somewhat. Galway did turn up and played some nice hurling. The sending off certainly did not help but the writing was on the wall long before that.

Mary Morrissey saying that this victory "deletes" the performance against Dublin makes me...speechless.

Galway will not get such space, time and respect against any other opponent in the next round(s).

That said, 2 things can be taken from this...

    1. More forwards scored...MORE, than the last game.

    2. A win is a win.

But, this is Galway so who knows...

Our defense, bar Dillon in places, was shocking tonight. Brennan saved us from an even greater hammering, as did NOC. Goals have killed us all season, as well as watching the sliothar instead of your man and the open spaces. Our lads just did not show up tonight, and I think Sparrow has a lot of explaining to do as well as his trainer.. our lads are so far behind on their strength and conditioning too.

To add insult to injury, Gerry Quinn was brought on. That man should be booted off the panel as soon as possible. H hasn't started a single game this year, and came on once during the League afaik. He's a disgrace to the jersey.

    Gutted.

    Exactly... Galway still unproven.

Can they win the hard games played on the concrete?

In other words, tough fcuking hurling.

    Jury out.

What does everyone think about Sparrow's managerial position now? Surely time for a change?

Been saying this since before the league, an outside manager is needed.

Or at least a proper backs coach. Liam Doyle will always be revered for exploits in the 90's, but it's clear that a change is needed at the back. 12 goals conceded in 3 games against Limerick, Tipp, and now Galway. Something has to be done.

Sparrows biggest inditement is in the defensive stakes, 4 goals against limerick in the League final(at home), 4 goal against Tipp & 4 goals tonight leaked against Galway. Forwards are class, Backs & Goalkeeper are a basket case. If the next manager can address his then they are going places.

Sparrow is a ledge, but his tenure has been an absolute disaster.

Sorry my man, but Gerry Quinn doesnt pick the team, he has been singled out since he had a fight with that goul mike mc afew years bk. The disgrace is that James McInerney is in that team ahead of Bugler or Quinn they might be rash at times but at least they can hurl unlike JMCI, hes a bigger disaster since Connoe Plunkett playing centre back, at least he only lasted 1 match, we had to suffer this fool for 2 shocking defensive displays.

But Cooney was roasted by Hayes and should have been switched after the first ball.

Dillon was the only back who stood out.

Conor McGrath was given no ball.......I mean no ball they didnt even try to pick him out.

Then in the final few mins, instead of dropping balls into the square(not that it probably would have done much!) to get a goal that would have made it not look as bad, we had glory shots that Niall Moran would have been embarassed shooting for.

Sparrow has a lot to answer for, they we no where near the pace, and none of the intensity that inspired the start against Tipp. Not to come out after the game is shocking, I think he should just pack up and clear off to be honest, he has not brought the team on at all.

No one can describe Diarmuid McMahon or Fergal Lynch as class sorry man, they are DIRT!

Sorry billo, but Gerry Quinn has not hurled well at inter county level for years. He should retire asap.

why exactly is Gerry Quinn a disgrace to the jersey?
he is defiantly good enough to start on the clare team.

I think Gerry Quinn should definitley have been allowed start.
Diarmuid McMahon and Fergal Lynch have to go though. Useless the two of them!
