Call Of Duty Is Dying

Hang in with me for a second......I've always picked up the latest COD throughout the years - I believe I began with COD2 for the PC but last year was the first time I played online with friends. MW2 was new for us, never before had I had great entertainment from one game. It was something to sit around and have a few beers with while playing Xbox Live. It was so good, that we initially got together to play it for a laugh. I didn't mind buying the map packs because I had never played the previous games online and I realise now how much of a change each one was.

Fast forward to this year - Black Ops. I looked forward to it and although we didn't feel the same amount of entertainment from this one, it was still a good laugh with the Zombies. In fact, the only reason we still play BO is because of Zombies and nothing else. The map packs are coming quick and fast now with very little content to justify the price tag. Treyarch is not giving the fans what they want. Why don't they release a Zombie map pack or at least make 3 of the 5 new maps into Zombie experiences. It's the only thing they have going for them at this stage. Annihilation doesn't feel like COD maps and only a handful feel distinct from one another.

I think Activision are killing COD. I've never played Battlefield in my life but I don't think I will be buying MW3 until I get well and truly sick of BF3. Having glanced over the trailers and preview gameplay of both games, it doesn't look like they even attempted to try and take the franchise forward, in fact - it's identical to MW2. BF just looks visually amazing and sounds fantastic. I mean, just compare these two...

    Meh.....it had a good run

Both of these games were more than likely run at an enthusiast setting on PC's... I'll wait and see how they look and play on console before I start to judge them. I'm going to get both either way so I'm just going to wait and see.

I can't get into the whole zombie games. Standing around one spot looking through doors waiting for zombies to come. Shoot shoot, board up the door. 10 minutes of this until anything really happens. Then you die cos it all gets messy without knowing what hit you.

I love the usual multi-player, it's not dying at all. There will always be a game to enter and play. And playing the new maps, especially Hazard brought new found life into the days ahead.

The 500,000+ players online for the PS3 alone, at ANY time, kind of suggests otherwise... im sure theres probably alot more on the xbox aswel...

cs has been dying for 7 years on the PC... yet it's still the most played shooter on pc...

Saying that... im looking forward to both MW3/BF3.

This thread is an accident waiting to happen, and while I agree with the OP's sentiment to a degree.. can any die hard Battlefield fans who will inevitably participate in this thread please express their thoughts in a mature fashion.

No mudslinging from either COD or BF crowd please.

Battlefield looks amazing on that video as its running on a pc you wouldnt get much change from a grand for probably. I'll be getting both anyway. I'm happy with MW3 being similar to MW2 because its a direct sequel in the same franchise, long as it fixes the issues and give me more of the same gameplay I'm happy. Doesnt mean I dont want to experience new things in BF3 either.

As a sidenote, I was trading in a pile of dvds in gamestop last week and was chatting to the girl doing the trade in for me about how many great games coming out this year there are, they've taken over 250 preorders already for MW3, paid preorders at that. COD isnt going aywhere.

They'd say that anyway ! Just so you **** yourself and preorder aswel incase you miss out. I never had to pre-order from game, there was tons of copys of blops late on release day in Newry, and the shopping centres here are probably the most packed in the country come nov/dec ! But yeah.. COD isnt going anywhere for a while.. unless they do a tony hawk ! :D

Just want to say that "Call of Duty Is Dying" would be something that the gutter press would publish and to me you've not put a lot of thought into your post. I'm sure if you looked at the numbers of copies sold as the series has progressed you'd see just how wrong your assertion/diagnosis of COD being deceased is.
At 3:00 PM Friday, local autocrat C. Montgomery Burns was shot, following a tense confrontation at town hall. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was then taken to a better hospital where his condition was upgraded to "alive."
COD has Activision whilst Battlefield has EA, both are responsible for yearly re-releases of vastly similar games. They're always going to look for ways of making the most money from a series and alienate the fans. EA made a balls of the exclusive content with Battlefield 3 and no doubt Activision want as much dlc out there as possible for MW3 and black ops. Don't assume they're going to be near as generous (insane) as Valve and release games the quality of team fortress 2 for free.

I regularly play both games and on black ops there is on average 400k on xbox when I sign in during the evenings, I've seen it around the 1 million mark at launch and around 700k when a new map pack comes out. That's on a single system. PS3 and PC won't have the same number as that but the total amount of COD players far outnumber the total number of Battlefield players. On bfbcs.com you can see live numbers of players on, I've never seen it get near the numbers of black ops but it might have done, it might push 100k for all three systems but that's the same as Halo reach. For numbers played it's pitiful for Battlefield in comparison to COD.

The content put out by treyarch has always (to me at least) been weaker than IW who put out the best in the series. Also their multiplayer map design is bland compared to IW. Out of the 2 map packs I've bought only Stadium and Cotd were good. The rest were largely disappointing and I won't be buying more dlc for black ops. Zombie maps are even more specialised than normal multiplayer maps as far less people use them. It might make sense for the hardcore zombie players for a special zombie mappack only but then they're limiting themselves to a smaller market percentage and the majority of players wouldn't get it.

Both battlefield and cod have flaws and positives, bad company 2 has about 4 or 5 game types which truth be told can get very boring if you want variety whilst Cod lacks dedicated servers. I would hope that by them both being in direct competition that they advance their games further but to be honest I'm not expecting that from EA and Activision. MW3 has regressed in doing a 2 player zombie/horde mode whilst black ops had 4 player, battlefield 3 could have sod all game modes and do what they did last time and make players pay for a dlc game mode.

Neither game has advanced significantly for me, if you've played Bad company then you're not going to be blown away with what's put out there to whet your appetite. To me B3 looks even more similar to Bad Company 2 than Black Ops compared with MW2. Sure it might have the newer version of frostbite but if I don't see a noticeable improvement graphically for the new iteration I'm still going to be p*ssed off thinking they just made it that tiny bit nicer looking but it's 90% of the same.

Just to go off an a tangent, I don't buy into the typical COD gamer is a kid and battlefield player are adults. There are d*cks and decent randomers playing both, one game on bbc2 I've gotten messages of "gg" and from other players the typical "LOL camper ure s*it" the same happens in COD. You're more likely to meet (good and bad) people in COD due to no dedicated servers requiring matchmaking lobbies and the ability to talk in groups larger than 4 people. I particularly hate all the hardcore/normal comparisons that inevitably arise in both games. Neither games are realistic and nor should they strive to be, games are meant to be fun first not realistic. Without wishing to stigmatise people, I'm of the opinion that COD gamers don't slag off battlefield (possibly haven't even played it and have no opinion of it) but battlefield players generally think less of COD players.

To be honest COD/Battlefield aren't dying but stagnating like most of the games industry. They're the biggest names in fps out there and they know that the game will sell on reputation alone and don't have bother striving for that perfect game. I'll still get both but don't expect me to throw my money away for overpriced DLC that should have come with the game. Until another series comes in and usurps them we're going to have this duopoly with us for quite some while.

You sure on that ? Theres on average 500-600k on the PS3 online at around this time in the day. 562,299 atm (Map pack isnt out till the end of next month so its the typical amount).

I agree with alot of what your saying.. but BF3 looks insanely good compared to BC2. black ops has a different art style than MW2, thats the only reason it looks so different from MW2, not that its improved graphically.

Ah I never preorder games, no point at all, same as buying them online, whats the point when they may not show up on launch day?

I've seen it sometimes around 700k on some weekdays but I definitely remember it around the 400k mark last time I checked. I picked a low point number so that even against a busy BC2 number it still was substantially larger. That was probably an extreme low point as I think I've seen it back up to 1 million for the double XP also.

B3 will no doubt look amazing on a top spec pc but on an xbox there is precious little room for improvement after all these years. Short of having 2 discs one for multiplayer and one for singleplayer I reckon games developers have more or less maxed it graphically. PS3 has a lot more power but I think developers won't push the limits and peg the consoles at a similar level. The pc demo videos aren't going to be representative of what a console gamer will experience.

I think I saw the xbox version of B3 on Jimmy Fallon and thought it looked fairly crappy compared to the demo video that was released before. Less effects of subtle lighting, felt less cinematic and immersive. It could be that the videos weren't optimised as the MW3 teaser bit with Simon Pegg on the Jimmy Fallon show looked pretty average. Both games just seemed underwhelming compared to what the initial trailers showed. MW3 will be roughly the same for all 3 I'd imagine.I don't think that many would disagree that B3 on the pc will be far and away the best looking out of B3/MW3 on the 3 systems.

Black Ops peak on xbox 360 was more than 3 million people online around the time the First Strike map pack came out

There is waaay too much text in the above posts to sift through so I'll just give my opinion.

Call of Duty isn't dieing so much as its getting repetative like fifa or any games that are released annually. Activision treats the franchise as a cash cow and rightly so since they are a business even though I dont really like it either.

Theres more I could add but I'm too tired and lazy today

COD is not dying even though the gameplay has not really progressed much since COD4.However COD still sets the bar in terms of online shooters.COD is now a franchise and millions of people like me will buy the next game just because call of duty will be written on the box.Unless they make an absolute turkey of a game or a COD killer emerges I dont expect that to change soon.

There's a lot of life left in it yet judging by the sales figures....COD4 < MW2 < Blops

IMO the biggest problem is your never going to keep everyone happy. I started COD MP with MW2 and it's still my favourite game by a mile. People I play with though prefer Blops  so I rarely play it. :(
Most who started with COD4 would consider MW2 a clusterfcuk and believe COD4 to be the pinnacle.
There's a lot of fun to be had in these games still if you play with the right crowd. Or you could just biatch about ghost, noobtubes, stopping power, MLC, akimbo shotguns, OP killstreaks, rapid fire, final stand, camping, HB sensors, the famas , the ump, the scar, the ak74u.......... etc etc

COD isn't dying. MW3 will sell more than every other game before it in the series as stated by others. I think with yourself OP it is dying and thats fair enough but it is still a great game and one that is totally different to the other being Bad company2. This is what I love about it all though.

You have two games. Both of them look nice, they play nice, they have nice extras but they are different in two fundamental ways. The team based objectives in cod do not stand up to BC2 in any way shape or form. There simply is no comparison, it is what makes BF what it is and the classes I also feel for these team based games are far more superior in BC2. These for me are what makes me play BF more as I like being in squads actually working thru a game in a tactical manner.

However I love what COD gives you too! You have more freedom to do what you want in it in terms of kits, killstreaks, customization, Lots more game type modes aswel as Spec ops and zombies that BF doesn't have(this is the biggest fall DICE need to get up from in BF3) The game modes like Yimrag said in BF are just so repetative which to me is a huge thing and I get absolutely no joy out of bad company when playin alone where as I can play cod alone at any time because it is different.

Yeah thats one thing that i noticed with BC2, It is fuuuucking massively frustrating playing on your own. At least with CoD you can win games on your own if you get a bad team, but with BC2 you are absolutely screwed if you don't have a decent team.

so is COD though, not just pub stomping either, thats gets boring. Although some people seem to think that 6 guys in a clan who know each other hammering 6 random people is an achievement, its like Ali being delighted he knocked out a blind kid once :pac:

Its still not on the same page though. I grew up for years playin CS and hated pub whoring. I loved team tactics in mixes that you don't get in COD even with a party of 7 or 8 mates! I find for me BC2 gives me what I need in terms of team based games and working out what your gonna do. But don't get me wrong. I've been on blops with the boards gang once or twice and its defo a good laugh with 8 people in playin! But again brings me back to my point! they are both great games. You should get BC2! My blops is dead so now Im back with BC2 :( Played MW2 during the week just hated that game online and wasn't any different when I went back :(

Yeah im in the same boat really, bashing pubs in cs can be fun on some community servers tho ! But yeah, the difference in tactics and communication in cs mixes and sometimes even gathers(From the odd one i played back in the day) is far beyond what you'd get in any party on cod.. but i guess thats because its needed as your not really playing against the typical public player, wereas with CoD you can go into almost any lobby with 1 or 2 other guys and win every game.

I haven't really played many games on BC2 in a group so i'll diffo be doing that with BF3, there isn't really that many people on my friends list that play BF tbh.

So yeah, those in the PS3 thread/those I play with probably can sense my dwindling faith in the COD series. COD4 was the one constant at least in regards to FPS games I had when since things went next gen but since that's been gone.. somewhat lost in regards to FPS games on the market currently.

MW2 I've slated enough times and anything I'll say I'll no doubt get some stick for from a certain crowd. BOPS, I do like it and I find it better than MW2 but that's not saying much in truth. But I'm sick and tired of it both those games. Every now and again I feel like hoping on both games. But common sense comes to mind soon after those initial thoughts. I don't understand how people can play it constantly these days. People live for COD multiplayer and nothing more, some complain a good bit about it but still return to it day after day..

On a general scale, the series isn't dying and will not for sometime. The sales alone from BOPS illustrate this. With the Modern Warfare name returning, I fully expect sales to increase even more.

Hopefully both MW3 and BF3 good. I'll be picking up both.

As said by myself before and others here, Battlefield really needs to be experienced in a near to full party to get any enjoyment from IMO. I personally enjoyed the BF2 beta that was released a couple of years back, but I only knew a couple of people who were definitely getting it. That alone was a major put off.

This time around, I'll definitely pick it up. Perhaps not on release but relatively soon after. I need to hear some validation from others, and I don't mean those who are heavy into the Battlefield series. I'm half considering doing this with COD as well.

If you have bad company myself and yimrag play a good bit Add me thru him if your on xbox but yeah in fairness you can't beat a good public server and just go around owning lads its great craic.
