Internal Static IP Address on UPC Thompson Router

    Hey all,

    Trying to set up an internal static IP address on my home network so that I can connect my XBMC on Apple TV 2 to my Mac where my videos are located.

    Currently I have the IP of 192.168.1.0.22. I want to set the IP address to 192.168.0.83

    When I do that, it says that I am connected but I dont get any webpages and cannot ping the router.

    Even if I set the IP address to 192.168.0.22, the same thing happens.

    Anybody done this before. It has worked on loads of modems that I have used before but I was with VF / BT before using their modems.

    Not a broadband issue, since you set the IP on the client computer and not the modem. Thread moved to the Mac forum.

    First of all, this is a networking issue. Nothing OP has said relates to an OS Specific question. A

    aktelmiele: Can you include in your question all of the relevant settings on your router like:

    The routers IP
    What (if any) kind of addresses are being assigned via DHCP.

    How did your comp with Static IP get it's DNS server addresses? Did you set them manually? (Normally you have to if you are not assigning an address via DHCP)

    Also, I presume this is a Typo, but 192.168.1.0.22 is not an IP address.

    The routers default gateway is 192.168.0.1
    The IP I am trying to set is 192.168.0.83 --> This is within the router IP pool
    I have also tried 192.168.0.22

    DNS: Have tried automatic and Google DNS

    When I set everything to automatic I can view webpages

    When I change the setting in my Mac to Static IP with Automatic Gateway, even using the same IP address I had when I set it to automatic, I cant view webpages. I cant ping or traceroute either

    Yes, that was a typo. It should have been 192.168.0.22

    Can you check your routers DHCP range and report back? Might be a conflict.

    The range is

    192.168.0.10 --> 192.168.0.254

    You need to assign a static IP that is OUTSIDE this range.

    Still the same issue. AFAIK it shouldnt make a difference whether I pick an IP inside or outside the range to get connected. The only problem about picking one inside the range is the potential of IP conflict.

    Any other ideas? Im all tapped out on solutions :(

    Are you setting the IP on a mac, PC, ATV or the router itself?

    I would suggest doing it at the router configuration. For this you will need the MAC address of the device to get the fixed IP.

    In terminal:

    "ping 89.234.66.108", if you get a response then try "ping boards.ie".

    If you get no response the second time it is a DNS issue. You will need to manually input the DNS settings on the mac side. (with static set up you usually need to specify the gateway, the ip address, and the dns servers)

    When you are setting things up on the Mac side, have you tried manually setting the gateways IP address and the DNS servers?

    That worked.Weird, I was using "Using DHCP with Manual address"

    It normally works this way with other addresses.

    When I set it to Manual, it worked.

    Thought I had tried this before.

    While you are correct in that its better to have Static IP addresses be outside the range of those assigned by DHCP, it's not strictly necessary. In most cases addresses are assigned from the start of the range, so not until the 83rd DHCP device was connected would there be an issue.
