Worst refereeing decision you've ever seen?

    First off lets not mention The Henry incident because it's too obvious and I'd imagine most posters are sick of hearing about it.

    The worst decision I've seen this season was in the St Johnstone vs Celtic game where Michael Duberry clearly handled the ball inside the box, looked at the referee MR. Ian Brines who did nothing. Unbelievable stuff.

    Trying to select the worst of all time is more difficult. We've all seen some howlers down through the years. I don't know why but the Man United vs Tottenham game from a few years back springs to mind. Pedro Mendes goal from the halfway line should have won the game for Spurs. Unbelievable how the referee and linesman missed it.

    On a bias note it'd have to be the Luis Garcia goal in the CL semis in 2005, or any of Ovrebo's 6 or so decisions in the 2009 semis. Stuart Attwell's ghost goal in the Watford - Reading game a couple of years ago comes to mind.

    IIRC If the goal wasn't given then wouldn't it have been a straight red and a penalty?

    There is no such thing as the worst, there are millions of them that have been equally as bad.

    If I had to pick one, I'd say its Fifa not going for goal-line technology. While its strictly not a refereeing decision its does affect the ability to correctly referee for all of them.

Lets say for a moment that it wasnt over the line and it shouldnt have been a goal - it was still very close to call and most people needed a number of replays. Theres still a fair amount of people who believe it was over the line so it cant be considered as a terrible refereeing decision.

    Even looking at it now its hard to tell.

    Back when I played under 15's or 16's I think,the other team had the ball in our box,took a shot and it trickled wide of the post.It had gone as far as the net pulls back where the stakes are,I picked it up,ran onto the pitch and gave it to our goalkeeper and was running back into position.I had reached the peno spot or so and the ref gave a peno for handball by me and I got a yellow card!!

    Stuart Atwell letting Liverpool play on when Sunderland were flicking the ball bacl to bring Mignolet forward to take a free-kick is up there.


    Also, the beachball incident too.

    Might as well mention Graham Poll and his three yellow cards. Getting a call wrong can always be excused as a matter of opinion, but booking a guy three times and not even noticing just screams incompetence.

    With the Garcia v Chelsea goal, Chelsea got away with it lightly. If the referee didn't give the goal, he had to send the goalkeeper off and give a penalty.

    Semi final of a 7 aside, the ref gave a penalty for someone falling over in the box with no one near him. They guy fell over goes to me no idea what that was about sorry. Turns out the ref was the brother of the opposition captain. Needless to say we lost. Still pisses me off and i still give the ref grief over it every time he refs me since.

    The penalty in the Liverpool Chelsea game about 4/5 years ago when someone jumped into the back of Finnan.

    It wouldn't be the worst but it's pretty bad and hasn't been mentioned yet so stick it on the list.
