Pac-land is an awesome game, one of my favorites, nearly comes close to Rygar!

Is the Hu the same as the one in my photo? Would love to get some ID's on my other Hu's. Gonna ask the seller to send me pictures of the games before he puts my parcel together.

    Looking forward to next week!

Yeah it looks like it to me, see below. I think Pac-Land was the only pac-man related game on the PCE? Could be wrong there though.

I am 40 in January next, and I want the following for this landmark celebration,

    a) A PC Engine Turbo Duo
    b) An Atari/Sears Pong Machine
    c) My hair back on my head and not growing in my nose and ears

@Andrew76 What's that game next to RType II on your photo? It looks like a Parodius or Twinbee game, is it a shooter?

@safetyboy The TG16 is a bit of an odd choice. Those PAL one's I'd steer well clear of plus you won't be able to use anything other than PAL Hu's on it. I believe there is a region mod but you'll still be forced to 50hz. You can buy converters too I think but these are pricey.

It's just not worth the bother. In the research I did over the last few weeks/months I found comments from the PCE community saying the same thing over and over. The cheapest, best set up you could get if you want the best of both worlds is to get an NTSC-J Duo-R or RX and compliment that with an NTSC-U Turbo Grafx 16.

A cheap start up is to go for the Core Grafx or Core Grafx II and move up (which is what I've done).

Or you can be really bold and buy a PC Engine LT and a Super CD 2 and modify the two to fit (see YouTube). Just don't tell the wife or you'll be served divorce papers and she'll want the LT as part of the settlement!

Nah neither of those games. Haven't actually played it yet but from the screenshots it looks like some sort of Wonderboy/Jackie Chan/Gunstar Heroes mashup. :)

Very good, thanks for taking the photos. :)

I'll file that one on my 'to play one day' list, along with that 'Boy near some trees' game on the Virtual Boy someone posted the other day.

I wouldn't hold this forum responsible for my own future fallout but I will hold my obsession with retro games responsible.

    Picture the scene.

7PM on Sunday. Had whole day off, played nintendo. Girlfriend comes home after work.

Girlfriend - What you do today?

Me - Well I finally passed Mario 3. Then I played Secret of Mana for a couple of hours. Nearly got a boxed copy of Mario Party 1 and 2 for peanuts on ebay but got outbid at the death.

Girlfriend - Did you do anything not involving sitting in front of the tv?

Me - Well I cleaned up. My games and stuff and organized them all better for when I take a picture of them to post on boards.

Girlfriend - Im going to the pub!

    *Door slam*

Me - I'll be along in a minute, just have Sagat and Bison to defeat on the game and ill have done it without a continue.

My poor writing skills actually cant convey the true situation when I start on about games to her.

I know its not totally relevant but you folk know your game stuff (and much respect form me for that). Me being a gamer since I could crawl I am pondering if the Wii U will go the way of the Virtual Boy ? I suspect it will. Why? Because several developers have said that they will create games based on current franchise for the console, I hear the words - retrofit, tweak, optimize etc. Thing thing should breathe creativity. It should be totally clear what the machine is and what its capable of doing. It a seems like a brave face is being put on and titles will be forced into the form factor rather than the form factor enabling those titles. At the moment we cannot even get technical specifications.

    A very familiar tale alright...
I nearly get divorced on a regular basis due to my perceived laziness.
Bear in mind however that I do all the vacuuming, ironing, window cleaning, bathroom bleaching, kitchen duties, laundry etc, as she works 9-5 and I'm off every other day.
I am just very very disorganised.
I don't often even fit in retro gaming into my morning!!

@Andrew76 Just a small request to ask. If you get a sec and don't mind, can you show us the back of the Gate Of Thunder CD you have?

Also, are those Turbo Grafx Hu's or CD's? I know the Duo/R/RX CD unit is region free but did you mod the Hu slot? Just wondering. Cheers. :)

Gate of Thunder comes on the same CD as both Bonk games, I was just showing the different manuals for the one CD. You can just make out the three game names on the disc bottom left:

They're all Hu cards other than the CD above. Noob question but why do you ask? I thought all Hu's are Japanese and worked in all PCE variants?

Anyone ever heard of this game? Apparantly it's the rarest Snes PAL release?

"Xandra no Daikbouken" was also released in Europe under the title "Whirlo". For some reason, they made the main character look disgruntled in this release by giving him angry-looking eyebrows. Bizarre

    Link

Not sure about the rarity factor though.

Cheers for the info. Was just curious. :)

Nope Hu's are not region free. The CD's are. You can buy converters which are super expensive, hence it's cheaper just to buy a US Turbo Grafx console to play USA Hu's on.

If you buy a PAL console be prepare to have your buttocks well and truly plowed.

Interesting. I thought they were from the game formats pic in this link? Other than the SuperGrafx HuCard note.

    Your welcome (I think :confused::D).

Definitely think twice before going for the PAL console though. I almost went for one a while ago because the prices are so attractive, but it's just not worth it in the end I think.

Also be careful buying the original white PC Engine as you will almost certainly need to pop an RGB mod on it (the Core Grafx and Core Grafx II feature AV out, there's actually no internal difference between the two consoles other than the Core Grafx II was released to colour match the Super CD Rom 2 attachment apparently).

Why an RGB mod? Because the white PC engine only has an NTSC RF output which will simply not work outside Japan, even in the USA. So be careful and if you do want the white one, either buy a pre-modded one or budget for the RGB mod to be done.

No idea where in Ireland you can get that done though...

Nice work! I might mod my Core Grafx then as I hate AV almost as much as RF. Very useful links thanks.

    Want a TurboDuo so bad!

I have a TurboGfx though, nice machine, surprising amount of power, how the MD ever took off with the PCE/TG16 in the market I'll never know.
The card convertors are astonishingly expensive.
Cheaper to just buy a PC Engine, minding the video output as detailed above.
The TurboExpress is a lovely thing too, not as expensive as I remember either.
