Offered my Steel Battalion to a mate for mech playing fun and he turned down the offer, despite being overwhelmed with the game, he said he hadn't the room for the controller!
I nearly bought him an Xbox in Balbriggan so he could play it too!

    Master of the Universe

Before I packed that away I'd been playing it a hell of a lot. Once you get to grips with the controls is absolutely fantastic. Such a punishing game, but totally worth the commitment..and space it takes up :)

    I don't own a copy of Tetris.

I do own a Wonderswan Crystal with both Gunpey games. That's how pretentious I am. Tetris is so mainstream.

All my new pickups are in the SHMUP PORN thread. :)

I nearly bought a Wonderswan Crystal today, but noticed the choice of SHMUPS is limited, bar one that is SUPER expensive... :( What's the WS Color like? Is the screen much worse than the Crystal?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,753 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

Yes, the screen is quite un readable excepting in direct light, at least that was my experience, like a higher resolution GBC screen.
    The Crystal fixed this issue.

Good to know, I think I need to look in to the Crystal a bit more. Looks like a hoot. :)

    Any games you'd recommend?

    Shall do! :)

In other news, I've been very bold today... I went and bought a PC Engine and a stack of 'games and stuff'.

Here's an artists impression of my purchase which includes:

1 x Core Grafx console (unboxed I think)
    1 x AV Composite cable
    1 x Step down transformer
    1 x PC Engine Multitap
    3 x Controllers
    19 x Hu Cards

Some of the games I can see are:

    Out Run
    Splatterhouse
    R Type II
    R Type III
    Pac Man?
    Addams Family
    Space Invaders?
    Moto Roader?
Vigilante (with the AWESOME NTSC-J COVER ART!)
    Galaxian?

...and more. Can anyone name any of the below?

It's not a Duo-R or RX (which is what I actually wanted) but I got all this for a 75 GBP plus 10 GBP recorded delivery.

I think it's worth it for the games and accessories alone.

Well I have Gunpey, Rhyme riders, Klonah. All ok games and playable in English, that porblem seems to be that a lot of the games are all in Japanese and heavily text based or trading card style games so you'd need to get the list of English friendly games off that new fangled Google thing.

the games I'm gonna get are Murishimashi a Ghouls -n Ghosts game supposedly it's harder than the original though.
Judgement Silversword would be nice but at €100+ probably never buy it unless it goes down in price.
Dicing Knight is an RPG in English but again it goes for man money.
A lot of games can be gotten cheaply off fleabay but it seems to be pot luck.

WS is a nice console, feels like it'd break easy though. Yes it's hard to see (unless the Sun decides to go supernova as you're playing) but as we are all used to Gameboy and the pitfalls on no backlight you should be fine.

I think the Core Grafx units looks class, nicer than the Duo-R imo.

That's the pricey game I was on about. :o

True. It's a cheeky little unit, I like it more than the Duo too, but getting a Super CD for it will be expensive. I might flog the console off at a later date to fund the Duo-R purchase.

No point buying a standard Duo as they are notorious for lens and overheating issues.

Is that Pac Land rather than Pac man?
Probably one of my fave PCE games (that splatterhouse R-type and oddly enough Neutopia the zelda clone)

    Dunno, it looks 'Pac-esque'. :D

Out Run was a big selling point for me, looking forward to it. Splatterhouse and the Rytpe's too. :) Wish I could ID the other games. Anyone?

Ooh didn't know that about the duo, have the R version myself. I think you're correct re: Pac-Land luas_dublin, have that one and the graphic on the card looks the same. Can't make out the others though.

Yup, hence the price difference. Ironically he original Duo has the headphone jack although I think that's the only difference. The R and RX feature no internal upgrades, just better lenses and ventilation.

Got any pics of your PCE stuff? Sharing is caring! :)

The machine itself is packed away and would take ages to get to, just got a small bunch of games with it. Always wanted a PCE after reading about the "arcade perfect" games in C&VG etc but ended up getting a Duo-R for some reason.

    pce1.jpg

No idea what the top left game is below, from the manual it looks like some sort of side scrolling something or other. :)

Pac-land is an awesome game, one of my favorites, nearly comes close to Rygar!
