drop handlebars vs straight handlebars

Hi, I have a Lapierre Cruiser road bike and am very happy with it. However whenever I seem to see anyone else on a road bike, I always notice the drop handlebars. Can someone tell me what the benefit of these are if any, and is it possible to install drop handlebars on a bicycle with straight handlebars?

The benefits are more hand positions which are better for aerodynamics and longer rides as it reduces strain on the hands/wrists.

You can change from Flat Bars to drops, but it's not cheap and you tend to end up with a 'compromised' position, as hybrids are set up to be a bit more upright, so you'd be looking at a pair of bars, a new stem and new shifters/cabling, which means not a lot of change from 400 quid ish by the time it all adds up (assuming you want integrated brake levers/shifters)
