Folks I have a globe vienna 2 hybrid bike and no mater how much I fiddle with the rear mech I can only get a few consistant gears (smallest and Biggest on cassette and one either side). When I want anything elese the gears are always hunting.

The rear mech is a shimano altus 8speed and the shifters are Shimano, ST-EF-50, 8-Speed, EZ fire plus.

Do i need to change the mech, the shifters, both and what would you recommend that would do my job for a decent price

I would be inclined to change the cable first. The cable doesn't have to be completely broken to cause problems with shifting.

    Yeah cable first.

Check the derailler for play where it bolts on to the hanger. Its unlikely but it happened a derailler of mine after I gave it a few knocks, so I had to replace the derailler.

I would bring it to your lbs, theres about twenty things that could be wrong, cable not clamped right, damaged cable, bent hanger, bent mech, miss aligned dropouts, maybe check the rear wheel is in the frame properly first and if its quick release make sure the
Springs are the right way round.
