TBH, anyone else with the same disease as him will see that he could carry on and live life to the full to the very end. No matter what you think of him as a politician, his character is an example of someone who wouldn't let a fatal disease get between him and life.

Agreed. I tend to be extremely sceptical of politicians and their motivations, but I can't reconcile that scepticism with Lenihan's desire to stay in politics even when he knew he would most likely be dying soon. He must have been motivated by something more than base political instinct, and I think for that he is worthy of respect.

Would most people think Noonan or Bruton have done any better in his positio? R.I.P Brian. His father died at a young age too.

I am going to split the thread into a condolences thread and a legacy thread. Please bear with me while I do this. Thanks.

Condolences to his wife and family and the extended Lenihan family.

I am very upset myself by his passing. He always seemed larger than life as a person and had so much more to give. Someone said on radio today that he seemed like he was from Roscommon and not Dublin. As a Rossie myself I felt like that about him - that he was "one of our own". Its a pity he spent the last few years of his life in such a stressful and thankless job, but I suppose the best way to fight illness is to not let it stop you living your life as you feel you should.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

I think that amidst all of the analysis of Brian Lenihan and the decisions and the policies that he shaped, the breadth of condolences coming in from those who knew him in a professional context speaks for itself. We might disagree with his appointment or the wisdom of his decisions, but I think his personal integrity was never in question.

Maybe you should've taken the job since you feel you could've handled the s(h)ituation he was handed so much better.
