Things to do in Tipperary

    Hi folks

    Just wondering what are good places to visit in Co.Tipperary,something different from the likes of Rock of Cashel etc,I have family members coming over and i want to give them a tour of tipperary

    Take them to Garrykennedy on the shores of lough Derg, also if you have the time theres a great scenic lookout over looking the lake just two miles south of Portroe fab place for taking a few snaps.

    Ballina/Killaloe is a heritage town on the shores of Lough Derg, very scenic and there are lots of great restaurants and pubs there.

    "The Lookout" is really stunning and it is just up the road from Ballina/Killaloe.

    There is also a hidden gem near portroe/ballina that not many people outside the area know about. ita called Tountinna. it has spectacular views in ever direction. You are able to see 4 counties. limerick, clare, tipp & galway.. On a good clear day you can see for miles in all directions.. look up google maps and look for portroe and ballina and its in the middle.. dont forget to bring a camera.. :)

    It is known locally as "The Lookout". I'd highly recommend it, fab place of a picnic if the weather is good.

    Tountinna is a different place 2 the lookout. it is a mountain.

    Tippboi, many thanks for the info. I am a regular visitor to the "The Lookout" but I never realised that Tountinna was closeby :o

    The Clare Glens near Newport are gorgeous for a scenic walk:

    There are also good hill walks and horse trekking in the hills around Borrisoleigh - I brought some visitors on a trek from the riding centre there across to Upperchurch with a lengthy stop at Kinnane's pub.

    Kinnane's is worth a visit even without the horses/hiking...

    Fethard is a very attractive heritage town and has a well-established market/car boot sale on Sunday mornings that's worth a visit. It's a short drive from there to Slievenamon.

    Is that still going? I was there years and years ago, camped there one night with cousins when I was about 8. What's there now? All I remember is some swings!

    I think the ruins of Fr Macs cross up beside the millennium cross actually has the better views. There is a carpark off the road there, but the 1.2k walk from the road to the crosses is great on a fine day, It may not be suitable for anyone elderly though.
