I was also under the impression that if you failed Maths, you failed the Leaving Cert.
Nah, but failing maths will close a lot of doors in terms of college etc

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Yeah when i did it in 1997 if you failed maths & irish you failed the LC, i think. Jesus, kids must have it easy nowadays. I failed maths, and irish, and now have a respectable IT job and have never once, in my entire life, been asked to show LC results in a job interview.

You can get into a lvl 5 fetac with only 5 ordinary D3s (which is like 25 points).
From there you can get into a degree and get an Honours degree.

So even if you get like 25 points you could still get a 1.1 Honours Degree

Theoretically.... I doubt this has ever ever happened!

I failed H maths. I'm now 25 and have a B. Eng Honours in Electrical Engineering and am a qualified Electrician. Ask anyone about the math in engineering, it's some of the hardest you'll do in 3rd level. I'm living proof that this thing is just an exam, not the end of the world!

If you fail to pass any subject you certainly would call that failing the leaving cert.

There's where your wrong. That would be called failing every subject you took for the leaving cert.

Its true that in that case, your leaving cert results would not be worth wiping your arse with. But the term "failing the leaving" should not be used.

The reason for this is, because the leaving in comprised of a number or subjects. If it were just one exam, a hypothetical single leaving cert exam, then you would fail "the leaving" if this were the case.

The Driving test is a single exam, where you clearly pass or fail. Because the leaving cert consists of a series of examinations, they must be looked at singularly. They are only grouped for points purposes.

You don't work for the Department of Finance, do you?

Very easy to say it's no big deal years after you've done it. I do think too much pressure is put on leaving cert students, but no need to be dismissive of what's a big deal for them at 17/18 either.

The Leaving Cert is only important for CAO applications, theres other avenues in getting into college, like FAS and the like.

You will never be asked for your leaving cert in a job interview unless its the Public Sector i.e Army, Guards, etc.

I didnt do that great in my leaving cert and its something I regret, I wasnt stupid just a lazy bollox in school.

That's probably an extreme case but I met a few people in college who came to the course through Access programs and the ladder system. One of whom was near enough to the top of the class every year.

AFAIK you still wouldn't fail the Leaving Cert itself. It would most likely effect you from getting into a 3rd level course though.

I recall be told that RTÉ's Charlie Bird doesn't having a Leaving, doesn't seem to have hurt him too much. Not that I'm recommending people don't sit it! ;)

To "pass" the LC you need to pass five subjects (one of which must be Maths)

I know somebody who failed the Inter Cert. Twice.

Passed three subjects in 1985, passed two subjects in 1986.

In my English paper two I wrote my comparative essay as a letter to the examiner complaining about the idiocy of the two questions asked and the ambiguity the language used created - something that's a pretty ridiculous issue to see in an English paper of all things, but yeah the thing was two pages of b1tching (I was really angry :o), still got an A2, they just ignore them. The only thing that you can do to your paper that could get you in trouble is stick a banknote to it.

I was told that this notion of "not getting the leaving cert" is a complete urban myth.

Even if one only scrapes a pass in a single subject they still get issued a certificate.

TBH there are so many bullshyte myths about the LC and exams in general (some of it disseminated by Teachers even) Its high time the Dept of Education issued a "myths and facts "booklet amd sent a copy to every student (and their parents)

I don't think its possible but not impossible to fail it. I say writing something and having some idea of what to write and bluffing your way through it. At least having gone to class and study some bit you will pass it though. Doubt you could fail all subjects unless you didn't do any work at all. Maths and Irish might be the exception as they are hard subjects and you need to nail the maths to be able to pass. The rest of the subjects you are doing you should do fine. English anyone could pass that just use your creative thinking! You will score some marks anyway. You'll loose more marks if not having anything write even if you write the wrong thing you might get some marks for trying! Maths is good like that, even if you didn't get the right answer if you did the steps right you get marked on each of them! The other subjects that are essay type stuff you need to have some idea of how to approach them whether you know the subjects well enough or not.

Depends if they have diagrams, explainations and formulas included in those subjects you need to have practiced them. If you practiced pass exam papers might get you through no problem. Basically cram with your life just don't take it too seriously do the best you can do! Seriously though if you did your homework that alone be enough to get you through the exam even if you don't think you know it some of it at least has sunk in, you wouldn't have stayed in school this long if it didn't! Then again some people are better at some subjects than others depends on the exam and the questions and the examiner too. Its not just what you know but how you put it to pen to paper and how your approach the questions, time and exam techniques are important too! Don't worry too much about it, if you are happy to pass subjects and not worry about getting certain grades in subjects you should keep that as your mantra.

    Good luck OP!

No such thing as failing the LC.
The accepted 'LC standard' is five passes at any level, so I suppose not getting that could be taken as failing, but officially there is no 'failed' LC.

When I did it it used to be if you failed Maths, English or Irish then you failed the Leaving Certificate, at any level.

Not sure if this has changed or not though.

As far as I'm aware that's how it works.

I did my Leaving in 2005 and again in 2006. Reason being, I failed maths the first time and we were told that if you fail English, Irish or Maths then you've failed your Leaving. They're core subjects and if you want to enter 3rd Level education, then you need all of them.

I remember looking up PLC's when I failed and almost all of them required you to have a certain grade in Maths. Missed out on my course by 5 points the second time around! Glad now though.

Contessa, you didn't fail the leaving, you just got a leaving cert result that it was difficult to do anything with. I failed maths the first time round as well and was accepted to do the maths entrance exam thing at DIT, opted instead to repeat, but I would have been in college now regardless.

You were told wrong on both counts

Although many third level courses would require English and Maths
