Recently finished portal 2, fantastic single player game.

I'm an old fart when it comes to some things. I'm just not particularly willing to spend €60 on a game that's going to last me 4-8 hours.

Different name, same thing. Multiplayer driven FPS in urban environments with a plethora of "licensed weapons" fighting rebels/extremists from <insert prefix here>istan. Only you can stop them... blah blah blah.

    Pass.

News that a chinook rotor blade snapped of when it was being started up.....Now thats what I call reliable!

You took that info from the aviation forum and had already started.

The blade had ground strike in the heavy winds. A C-17 came in for it this morning.

A quick question for people, seeing as this is the off topic thread, what would you consider to be the best singleplayer game recently? Or your all time favourite?

I know it's not recent but I've been playing Halo one and I am really enjoying it.

Recently? Half-life. Or Half-life 2 for that matter. Operation Flashpoint was also excellent, I got more game time out of that than Battletoads...

I just realised, that's how far back in time you need to go to get a lengthy single player-orientated game (not counting Japanese RPG's).

They're €50 now usually, it's a recession :D They dropped the regular price for most games from €60 to €50 gradually a year or two ago when the recession had started to take affect on gamers wallets and less people were buying games.

I still prefer a second hand bargain than new, unless it's a game I really want and have the cash.

I'd much more readily spend €50 on airsoft than a game though.

LA Noire is very flawed, but I'm enjoying it. Fable 3 is let down by a terribly weak ending, but it's a beautifully crafted single player experience otherwise, really lovingly crafted characters and locations, it's one of my favourite single players for years.

Is OP: Red River any good? I thought Dragon Rising was dreadful.

Walked into game the other day. Black Ops is still about €40 used. I've seen games for €60 pretty regularly still too.

LA Noire is the first game in about a year that didn't have the name "Madden" on the cover that's tempted me into paying full price, just because I need a decent game that I can't be finished with in a day. Dante's Inferno and Bayonetta were the only two on the Xbox that have managed that in the last year.

Haven't played Red River yet. Dragon Rising was bad enough to disenfranchise me with Flashpoint being ported to consoles. I'll pick it up when it's going for €20 (which should be soon given that 95% of gamers don't like the idea of your wounds not magically disappearing after ten seconds behind a rock). Flashpoints greatness started and ended with Cold War Crisis.

I have the orange box but haven't started half life yet, I've been meaning too. Just did portal for fun.

I was considering dragon rising, but might leave it now. I do think that Fable one was a really good game. I played it after Fable 2 but you can see a difference.

Half-life 2 is the last great FPS/Adventure game. Since then (and even around when it was made), it's all been about flash and polish, to the detriment of story and subtext. While HL2 wasn't exactly the most taxing plot, it was at least engaging without being overbearing or laden with cutscenes and FMV every five minutes.

Max Payne was probably the last really intriguing story in a game.

Best single player game? got to be part of a trillogy.

    Mass Effect.

I've never played a game I cared about the sucess of the characters in so much...

The Original Far Cry was pretty good. Mostly real world, beautiful graphics (for the time) decent AI, and open real world environments where you actually had to think before you charged in and it was a good length.

You can probably pick it up real cheap these days and it would be worth it at twice the price.

Get yourself onto Red Dead: Redemption. I loved that game, and the style to it. Be it the characters, the gameplay and the story coupled with the unique enviroments. if its a single player game you need, pick it up. Well worth the play.

100% agree with that.....I was skeptical when I saw people raving about it, and being a multiplayer junkie I was even more so when I heard it wasnt great in MP. But I got it anyway and loved it.

Also, for single-player...Dead Space was brilliant. I havent seen Dead Space 2 yet - is it even out ?

yeah but it isn't filled with little kids like you said thinking they know the difference between a Mp5 and SCAR never mind a SCAR L and SCAR H. and there's no holding breathe crap, ballistic system instead and complete destruction of buildings. nothing like any of the current FPS games out there at the moment, yes you use a gun to kill people but other wise it wouldn't be an FPS game.

I've never played Dead Space 1 or 2, but I've never really been involved in a Single player game. granted I've played HL2, Portal, Red Dead, the CoD campaigns and such, but I'm always the lad who is abusing the multiplayer.

Saying that, I played Red Dead from nearly start to finish. It took a bit to get me enthralled in the story, maybe because I was new to the whole single player experience, but my god was it worth it.

My only downside was that gathering all those herbs, pelts and what not gave no real advantage. Make money only to buy guns and ammo. How American of them:pac:

The whole fallout series has got to be the best single player experience I ever had, followed closely by my first play through of HL2.

Looking forward to Skyrim too :)

then again i play ps3 where few people use headsets, so might depend on what console you are using.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭NakedDex

It'll still be populated with kids. Being without a headset just makes them mercifully quiet kids.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,061 ✭✭✭Arkslippy

    I don't have a ps3 or xbox.

There, I've admitted it in a very aa type way. I have a Wii and no internet. Pity me, pity me.

The only multiplayer I see is in the officeblock.

Portal and Portal 2 were vGood too IMO, short, but good.

I vote Mass Effect, again. Just because.

That's a problem with your gaming rig, not the game.

Sam's right. Your rig is aging so it'll tend to lag. Do you find it hard to run bigger games?

    You could have a point.

I'm finding it very hard to get it going in the morning, and sometimes after its been used for a few hours, it just goes into standy mode for hours at a time, and nothing can wake it up again.

I also find it can be quite contrary and prone to sudden overheating if its mishandled....a lot more so lately than I ever remember it being.

Repair job d'ya think....or just upgrade to a newer model ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭NakedDex

Your model is obsolete. You're probably better off trying to find some spare upgrade parts to prolong the life if you can at all.

It's out about 4 months now. If DS1 was Alien then DS2 is Aliens. Faster paced action, more guns and not as scary. There is a great Jurassic Park homage scene in it.

first thing when i had the F2000 and i went to an airsoft site, people were like that's that gun out of CoD isn't it.

Tell 'em no, it's from Splinter Cell and give 'em a clip round 'de ear.:pac:

Better than DR, yes but still lacking. Maybe next time for codies.

ARMA2 with mods is where the real action is at.
