Agree that it can suit some types of gaming habits but not mine.

For the price of your mac I have a quad i5 and radeon 6870 surrounded by similarly high end components. Sure it's not as pretty, well made and deffo has inferior resale value.

But it's fulfilling a need the mac can't - serious FPS on the latest games. Hence I go back to my original post. If you're into gaming don't buy mac. When I say "into" I mean performance matters.
There's the problem. You are a serious gamer, most people are not. And any serious gamer would already know what specs they need, so it's a fairly safe bet that the OP is not a serious gamer. At most, he'd only be interested in a bit of light gaming, like myself and most other computer users. So this aspect of the thread is not much use to him, a Mac is more than capable of satisfying the majority of computer users' gaming needs, the tiny minority of serious gamers tend to customise their equipment so would have enough knowledge not to ask a board about a Mac.

You're right - the OP would know what to get spec wise if they were a gamer so I agree our convo was a little off topic!

Then you have to ask if it is worth it. I initially had a PC Gaming rig which cost me much more then the Mac I have now (cost me approx 2K).

There was nothing that could tax it, but the thing was huge, noisy and a total waste for doing anything other then gaming.

    http://www.adverts.ie/hardware/gamer-pc-box-only/101858

The sad thing was I never even got it sold on adverts.ie as every Muppet that contacted me wanted me to strip bits of the machine so they could upgrade cheaper. I ended up having to sell it less then $1000 even though it wasn't even a year old when someone eventually bought it (some months after I placed that advert).

My mac machine on the other hand on adverts.ie sold within 3 days for 200 euros less then I bought it and that was a year old.

Now I have a mac no bigger then a place mat, absolutely no noise and runs all the stuff that the windows gaming machine did.

So to me you need to factor in...
    - Performance for what you need.
    - Support contract if it fails.
    - Resale value for when you want to upgrade.
    - Form/Design so it doesn't look horrible in your computer room.

Personally I can't see PC prices being much better then Apple when you factor all that in.

I agree with all of the above. Let's not forget I use an iMac as primary machine and also a MacBook as main laptop.

I feel your pain re putting money into gaming rig and no it is not worth it financially for sure.

In saying that I'm a tech geek so have to have the best performance I can afford plus some!!

Just thinking about the whole iMac v PC shyte again. Let's say you wanted a PC with:

    i7 Chip
    1 TB HDD
    8GB RAM
    27" Monitor.

What WOULD it set you back?

Maybe I'm wrong, but a Dell Alienware Tower (w/o monitor) is coming in around €2k+ for those specs.

    Am I wrong?

I'm not sure, but I'd say you'd be talking about €900+ for the machine and at least €800 for an Apple equivalent LED LCD display. A 27" i7 iMac costs €2100 and it has a lot going for it in terms of design, software and other features.

You could get those specs for around €700 comfortably, and that's including a better graphics card. Equivalent monitor would €600-€900 depending where you shop and what deals you can get.

Just checked the Dell Site again.

    XPS 8300
    i7 Chip
    1TB HD
    8GB RAM
    Bluetooth
    Wireless
    No Monitor.

Tower alone coming in at €1068.99.

And I can't even FIND a monitor resembling the iMac one.

I will have my iMac 12 months in June and I must say I don't regret it for one minute - although OSx was a bit daunting at first.:o

Those LED backlit displays that Apple use aren't cheap. I remember looking at some Dell 24" LEDs a while ago. They used the same panels as Apple used and cost only a bit less than the 24" ACD. They were big bulky things though and not a patch on the ACD design-wise. However, they had many more connections and other throwaway features.
