Thoughts on Trek 2.1

    Hi all,

    Sold my Giant Defy i got last year with a view to upgrading and am looking at the Trek 2.1.

    I can get one through a shop i know for 1200. Just wondering what others think of it and is there better out there for that money. I can push to 1300 if needed.

    I will use it mainly for sprint tri and general training for fitness to save my weak ankles !

    I'm getting aero bars and my own pedals Shimano pedals.

    Any feedback or options would be great.

    I have one and have no complaints so far and at 1200 euro your doing well as i paid 1345 euro only thing i didnt like and changed were the tyres had a blow out at 60kmh on the front tyre had a split put on some gators.

    I have a trek 2.1 and find thatwith 105 shimano gear etc it is a great bike but also is alluminium. If I were to get a new bike I would consider a ribble gran fondo for the price and it is carbon reviews are great. Post back with your choice of new bike

    Weight isn't my biggest issue yet as i still have a lot of weight to gt off myself 1st:D

    But i'll look that up. What makes the 105 so good ?

    105 is generally considered the baseline groupset for anyone cycling seriously. Tiagra & Sora are the entry-level groupset with an upgrade to 105 recommended as the first point of call when needed.

    Also 105 is ten-speed, Tiagra is 9-speed. It costs a lot of money to change a 9-speed road bike to 10-speed because you have to change the shifters. So if you have 105, you can upgrade to Ultegra in bits rather than as one big jump.

    I've been riding my 2.1 now for 18 months and I'm very happy with it. It's sturdy and has survived a number of crashes fairly unscathed. The front-end on treks gives a little hassle. It creaks after a few thousand km and that never goes away (there's a thread here on it). Also, white bar tape will break your heart if you're trying to keep it clean.

    Treks are overpriced though, even at the price that you're getting you can get higher-specced bikes. The Focus Cayo for example gives a full carbon frame with 105 for less than €1200.

    That looks good, i know my size and have a guy who can fit me to it etc but i'll see can my contact get that one and at what price. I'll also look up some reviews.

    Does anyone here actually have the Focus, i'd be interested in hearing some feedback from members here.

    i bought the 09 version if thats any good, it has different forks, its stable at speed, comfortable on rough roads think it weighs around 9kg a wheel upgrade will lop 0.5kg off that

    mine has a full 105 groupset with shimano rs10 wheels

    changed seatpost (bolts broke) , saddle (prefer selle italia) and stem (bolts were rusty after last winter) so far

    people claim it has a racey position, short headtube, but cant say ive noticed really

    Spoke to a bike mechanic and he said if i can get the Focus full carbon for 1169 i should go for it vs 1240 for the trek 2.1.

    I'd add gator tyres and profile desion T1 plus aero bars and i'd be a happy camper.

    I know my size so i could order from wiggle and have the mechanic assemble it for me.

    Rigth read some reviews and only negitaves i can find the saddle and wheels.........

    So what would it cost to eventually change these, seeing as i'm spending 1200 on the i don't want to spend crazy money on the wheels if i change them.

    Ok i'm going to order the Focus tomorrow, the price has come down to 1103 on wiggle so that that price with the 105 and carbon frame i can't pass it up.

    Any final thoughts before i do it ??
