Just a quick question, as a rule of thumb how often should you get your road bike serviced?

define serviced?

In theory it should be regularly cleaned and regularly oiled which lengthens the lifespan of many components such as the cables and chains.

This is easily doable by anyone themselves and doesn't require a shop mechanic.

Again, it depends on what you mean by service?
As the poster above said - keep your bike clean and it will need less maintenance.
You should check your bike before every ride, brakes, cables, tyres - 30 seconds. If there is a problem with one of these items, then you sort it out straight away.
If you mean service as in regrease bottom brackets, hubs & heatset, it will depend on how often you use the bike and the conditions you ride in.

Well, I give the bike a clean every 2-3 weeks or so, trying to follow these:

I was more thinking of how often you should go to get a service done, just to make sure every thing is running ok and whether I need to get a new cassette/chain etc.
