    Guys,

I've ordered my bike on the cucletowork scheme, I will be using it for gettign fit purposes also.

I am currently running 3miles twice/three times a week and walking another 10-15miles.

what would be a good distance for me to start cycling over?

What kind of bike did you get?

I would go for a few 10-15k spins at first while you get used to the saddle.

It can be sore at the start while your sitbones are getting accustomed to the asshatchet:D

    20 km

    +1, i agree with raam

you will need to build a base. and even though you feel you can do more, stick with the 20 km. i suggest maybe a month of three rides a week

is there a specific heart rate Ishould be aiming for to optimisie weight loss and increase my fitness levels?

I have a polar heart monitor which i got 6-7 year ago when I went to the gym, but cant remember the HR number for the life of me

weight loss is best accomplished at 80-85% of your HR max

for fitness ride at 90-95% in bursts of 5 min followed by the same at 70%

Approximately 130 beats per min to optimise fat loss

would that not depend on age?

It's in the mold of the Giant Rapid range, just dont like the drop bars, prefer straight bars

Yes it would indeed hence why I said approximately, appropriate range is 50-65% max HR.
