My house mate is a racist?

I've been sharing a house with a Chinese woman and a few others for the past few months in college. I speak with the Chinese girl a fair bit while I am in the kitchen and just the usual friendly small talk. Her English is good but not great so I keep conversations light enough. Anyway today I am in the kitchen and we are talking about Bin Laden's murder and the people celebrating in New York. I bring up that I plan on moving to New York for a year after college and she starts on asking why would I ever go to America? I say that I like America and she then starts on about how there are lots of n***ers there. At first I thought I must have misunderstood what she was saying but when I asked her to repeat what she said, she went on dropping the N bomb like she was talking about the weather. I awkwardly winded up the conversation and made a mental note never to bring up the subject of America around her again. Strange one and dunno what the point of posting this is but meh, felt like sharing it.

She may not know that the N word is unacceptable.

However, in my experience Chinese people have a pretty low opinion of most foreigners.

Ask him, what he would do in a situation like this: he was beaten up by some sc***bags and the only doctor available to save his life is a foreign national. Would he rather kick the bucket before accepting the foreign doctor's help.

No guarantee, but it might help to change his idiotic attitude

You should have retorted, "Yeah just like the chinese and here!"

I'd be inclined to keep the small talk with her even smaller now

She's learning English, she doesn't yet know every word and convention

And well if she's been listening to rap music she would definitely get the impression it's in common use

I can see that. My dad was stationed in Japan and South Korea a few years ago and he would tell us stories about the Japanese, South Koreans, and Vietnamese who all had negative views of Black people; many of them developed from stories shared with relatives living in the US. In many urban areas, it isn't uncommon to see Asian immigrant communities sharing neighborhoods with Black Americans. There usually is a struggle amongst the two groups with Asians owning and operating stores within these Black communities yet having very high levels of distrust and dislike for the Black people they serve.

My x mil (who is black) was quite racist and refused to consider living in Willesden in North London because there were "too many black people there".

Yeah I agree and of course would not judge her on this, but the context in which she was using the word was to express her disapproval with going to America. lol so I dunno. She is probably from a rural enough community though in China and perhaps just not educated on diversity etc.

I was told it's very pronounced in New York, with the koreans and the blacks.

Not sure about New York, but I've personally experienced it in Seattle, Chicago, DC, and Memphis.

And, I forgot to mention in my earlier post that with the Korean War, WWII, and the Vietnam War, there were many Black service men who met and had relations with women from that area. There are stories of half Black and half Korean/Japanese/etc. children being left behind after the war and finding themselves abandoned by their mothers because it was looked down upon to have children with the Black servicemen.

Who says it's not ok to be racist!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,573 ✭✭✭pragmatic1

The term "racist" is used way too lightly these days. Theres a big difference between racism and ignorance. My granny calls black people darkies but I've never heard her make derogatory remarks about black people. There isnt a racist bone in her body, shes just ignorant to racial politics.
