N81, Blessington Valleymount and so forth depending on the route you take

    Here's an example from yesterday

The reverse of the above would bring you from Laragh over WG around the reservoir and back over SG

There is, just after Manor Kilbride you take a left and it brings you back up Sally Gap, but you would have to follow the signs for Valleymount first and it would be an extremely long ride (I am sensing, longer than you think.) You can plot this all out on Google Maps.

Coming down the gap, after about 14km turn right for Valleymount, after another 3-4km turn right for Ballyknockan just before Valleymount, another 16km (about 3.5km after you pass the bridge to Blessington) there is another right, follow that for a final right onto the road over Sally gap.

As Blorg said, it best to have a look at it on google maps etc, but it is reasonably well signed.

Having never riden the Wicklow gap, from which direction is it most difficult? From laragh or from n81, or much the same.

From Laragh is a lot more difficult- shorter and steeper. From the N81 it goes on forever but rises more gradually.
