Which bike?

I have taken my 11 year old son to a couple of bike shops to see which bike would be suitable to last him the next few years. It's just for local dublin roads to cycle to shop or call to friends. It seems an adult 14" frame is the one as the 17" is a bit big at the moment.

I don't really trust the sales guys too much as I'm sure they are desperate for a sale and would let me buy anything.

What do you think would be suitable? It can't be expensive as he wouldn't be using it enough to be spending a fortune. Also it should be light (aluminium?) and have good brakes.

Is it a mountain bike or a racing bike your buying?

I would think a mountain bike would be more sturdy for an 11-13 year old. I could be wrong.

Not really. You want a bike that's as simple as possible. MTBs are more complicated due to suspension and disc brakes, and are theft magnets. Securing a bike properly is a major PITA for a teenager with more important things to be doing.

    BMXs are pretty bomb proof.
