I'm in a 2nd Year Computing course atm and use this guy http://www.thenewboston.com/, his java tutorials are class, he explains everything in less than 10 mins when it takes my lecturer 2 hours and still no one has a clue what she's talking about.

I struggle badly at Java, but rest of the course I'm grand at. Some colleges teach it using Notepad (NCI does anyway), in my college we use Ecilspe.

If you want to really learn properly then use a text editor. Eclipse/Netbeans help you out a lot which is great when you know how to program and become productive.

But you cannot beat learning from writing it in plain text. You'll learn a lot more.
