ICSA - Nursing Homes

    Hi,

    First post here but heard a guy from ICSA on radio yesterday about Nursing Home Act and impact it has on farms, anyway saw a bit in times this morning. Didn't think it was a big issue at all but it's interesting enough at the same time!

    Thanks for you post - i am in a similar position
    I have being paying nursing home fees since 2009 for my Uncle and this years fee will be amount to in the region of €45000 (I have over €90000 paid so far)
    I am trying to generate this fee from my job (i know lucky to have one) and also running his Farm part time farming coupled with Single Farm Payment and Old Age Pension etc. I also have to run a home car etc and now hopefully the second lad will go to University later this year - that's 2 collage fees, rent etc.

    Regarding the Nursing Home Fair Deal Scheme if we opt for that they take a 5 %charge on his house up to 3 years and 5% on the farm for as long as he lives and more than likely we would have to sell the land to pay back the HSE.
    I cynically think at times, as i see all these old folk in the home, sitting / reading / watching TV, it makes since not to have anything in ones name because if ill health / old age befalls you, you would be looked after the same if not better as someone paying 45K plus p.a. in fees.
