Why do you subscribe to UPC?

The ITV2/3/4 screw-up prompted this again. I gave up NTL/UPC a few years back as I realised I was paying through the nose for channels I could watch through via sat for free. The only downside for me was losing a good RTE picture (the arrival of saorview has fixed that).

So whats your reason for sticking with cable over satellite and/or saorview?

Living in an apartment and being unable to put up an antenna. I'm canceling my UPC service because of the ITV fiasco and won't be replacing it with anything. I believe my life will be much better without TV.

Im the same, in apartment and as soon as the years contract is up ill be getting rid of the tv.

TBF though their broadband is the best in the country (except for the whole unlimited thing) and Ive no alternative so Ill be keeping their BB service.

Haha, doing the same but downgrading from 20MB to 10MB. If they make another mistake I will be canceling that as well and moving to mobile broadband. Have tested mb for the last couple of weeks and it works perfectly fine for my needs.

Like many, I use Sky/Freesat/Saorview for TV and UPC for broadband only.

Same here. Their internet packs are killer it has to be said. I rarely watch TV anymore anyway.

ESPN and Setanta are free on UPC with the Sky Sports Channels.

On sky you need to pay 15 euros I think per station to get them.

Service calls are free and they will replace the unit if needed.

Sky you have a one year warrenty after that you need to pay for a service call.

A phone line is required to get an additional box with sky, this is not the case with UPC. Everything is off the one feed and is split around the house.

Where I live UPC analogue is all that's available and people are happy to pay €25 a month for 14 channels, crazy.
A lot of people are switching to Sky for tv and keeping UPC for broadband-they're starting to cop on to the fact that UPC's triple play is not such good value after all.

Live in an apartment so its UPC or nothing. I would love to be able to get Sky.

Forgive my ignorance but what happened with ITV?

Does anyone else with UPC find that Setanta and Dave both freeze the system?

I have sky and I hate it but I'm stuck in a apartment block with the shared dish so I'm stuck with it.

Do you by any chance have one of the old silver NTL(Di300) set top boxes?
This model has the smart card at the rear.

because i can't fork out the initial cost for free sat i want a pvr. Is there anyone out there who will install a system and let you pay monthly till you pay it off ?

I'm with them becuase of there broadband, it's the best, i've never had any connection issues and always get full speed, but i think its very poor on there part that could not hold onto ITV2/3/4, they say their looking for alternatives, they just better not be some crummy channels.

    .

Sky Atlantic, proper digital with the red button action, decent menus and recording system, and access to sky player.

It sure has. It's an old model no longer available. I had the Di300 till last week. I could cope with the freeze @12am for the epg update every night but since certain updates went out on the system the box just became more unstable and would constantly freeze on certain channels.
You need to get the box swapped for one of the later models and you won't have that problem any more.

    we should swap apartments then.

I wish I could get the bundle pack from UPC.

Sky Atlantic has had 3 good series so far and just repeats of old shows. It's menu or recording system is not any better IMO than the UPC service. UPC have a new model HD CISCO 8685 which has a faster speed now and a less noisy fan.

i'm not too bothered about sky atlantic tbh. there are a couple of good shows on it (which i can get as box sets when theyr released) and the rest is repeats of stuff i have seen/own/couldn't care less about.

i do wonder how the mother will get on with no red button for the snooker and whatnot - being forced to watch whichever two players are playing on the live bbc feed like she used to in the olden days. oh well she will get used to it.

i honestly don't use the anytime thingy these days so not having one won't bother me much.

    don't use sky player so.

i am moving to upc cos i am beyond sick of sky. their attitude toward longtime customers and their 'customer service' leaves a LOT to be desired. and i am sick of it now tbh. the upc package will cost less than the one i am paying for on sky. i am quite happy with the channel line-up - could possibly do with one or two of the channels i do watch on sky that won't be on upc but that is nothing to freak about.

i have fta for the itv's that upc have lost, and it is connected to a dvd recorder for recording so sorted there.

question on the digital+ thingy from upc - i am assuming it is the same as sky, in that you can record one programme when watching another, or record two programmes and watch something previously recorded?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,560 ✭✭✭The tax man

With the UPC pvr your options are:
Watch a channel while recording one other channel.
Watch a recording while recording one channel.
In order to record two channels at the same time the box needs to go into standby. This rules out watching a recording while recording two channels. While in standby you can only watch a channel on analogue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,921 ✭✭✭✭hdowney

i don't have analouge so i take it my option there then if i was recording 2 would be watch a dvd, watch something on the fta or pee off and do something else. cos i don't think getting upc in is gonna give me analogue - only digital

Will be cancelling as soon as we have our Freesat/Saorview set up. Just looking for a good combi-box atm.

Will be keeping our 30Mb broadband for a lack of a better alternative.

I subscribe because I believe it is the best value for me, I want the Sky Sports package. I don't want to have a dish put up (I am also renting) and I think Sky are very overpriced. It works really cheaply with the UPC broadband and I am not investing in a dish when I will not always be living here.

I also love the DVR option with UPC.

UPC are worth it in my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,431 ✭✭✭Hugh Cream

Have UPC because it's not possible to put up a dish where I live, other wise I'd be on sky.
Cant even take up what it seems is the only good thing they provide(Internet)as it's not available where I live.

Stupid question time:how is it possible for UPC to provide a service without the need of a dish but sky need a dish?

Subscribe to their broadband, it's a good service and I'm happy to pay it.

We get the basic UPC package but it's never been paid for.
In this flat close to two years and it was here when I got here. If UPC want to send an engineer to the estate and cut me off, fair enough.

But I never ordered it and I'm not calling them over it
