    Hi folks,

I'm having a problem with windows update on 7 64 bit,
whenever I try to download an update It says:

downloading 4 updates (0 KB total, 0% complete).

This continues for a while and then I get the following error:
8000FFFF Windows update encountered an unknown error

Ive attached a screen shot of the updates I'm trying to download, Ive tried downloading one at a time but none will work. I have tried it on several different networks, over WIFI and ethernet and it still wont work.
I have googled and tried some tips online but can't seem to solve the problem.

    Anyone got any suggestions?

Search for them and install them manually.
    KB2479943 for instance...

Could the Windows Update troubleshooter help you?

Click on the Start orb, type "troubleshooting" into the Search box and press enter. Then, under the System and Security header click on Fix problems with Windows Update. That'll run the troubleshooter and if it can fix the problem then it will. :)

Thanks for the suggestions, I tried KB2479943 and it says that the update is not applicable to my computer. I tried KB2505838 and KB2483614 and it failed, I'm downloading SP1 (KB976932) now.

Odasise I ran the troubleshooter before and it says it repaired Windows Update components, but it still doesn't work. I tried it again and it did the exact same.

Any other hints? as i suspect SP1 won't install.

Try the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [February 2011]

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=914fbc5b-1fba-4bae-a7c3-d2c47c6fcffc
    Brief Description

This tool is being offered because an inconsistency was found in the Windows servicing store which may prevent the successful installation of future updates, service packs, and software.

Ill try that now, SP1 installation gave a "catastrophic failure"
    Error: E_UNEXPECTED(0X8000FFFF)

Tried the System Update Readiness Tool still failed, tried disabling security essentials still failed. Any more suggestions?

System restore to a point where you didn't have update issues then install SP1.
    Fingers crossed then

Crap, I don't have any restore points created except the one from attempting SP1 installation.

I was looking at the system reliability monitor and everything seemed to go down hill after a load of office updates were installed.
Would it be worth uninstalling them?
