Have not used milk direct from our own bulk tank in years !! Now due to recession am thinking of going back to the old system ?? When we used it before we collected it before it got into the tank, stored in the fridge but the problem always was huge amounts of cream in jugs , containers etc. Any new ideas on how to over come this problem ??

We used to collect the milk from the bottom of the bulk tank, less fat there. Is anybody pasteurising their own milk, how does it taste?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Jusus, ohhhh the memories. Meself and the 2 brothers used to tare the heads of each other for that stuff. Would mash it up in the cornflakes (mouth starting to water here.....) - both eating and drinking in it!! ;)

I usually shove the calf away from my quietest cow, and tuck in myself.

Im 22 and we've always used it. Dont think it would work though if the house wasn't so close to the parlour (40 yards). No pasteuriser just dip the jug in and away. Doesnt keep well after a day or so. The auld boy would drink it after a week the rest of us like it fresh. Hes a whore for leaving it out of the fridge too, that does nothing for the freshness. Its hard to switch to bought stuff like i did when i was at college but fresh from the tank it doesnt compare. None of us ever got sick from it either and we've had a couple of very high cell counts. Also we're a high protein and bfat solids herd.

Heading out to the tank now for a creamy pint of the white suff to have with the dinner !! Emmmmmmm

i'm 29 and have been reared on it since time began, even these times living away from home bring 4L with me each week and bottles always go home empty

when younger <18 before went to college would go through 2L each day no hassle

we had a brucellousis problem for a while so we used to pasturise it, mother had a pasturiser from when we were babies, it would hold about 10L, slightly different taste from the milk

it doesn't contribute to waistline don't worry about that

we haven't used a milk filter in 12yrs and never failed a quality test, or no ill effects from milk or any bits of sediment in the tank, we use a bucket with a cover to transport it to the house and store it in bottles or in jugs in the fridge

the secret of keeping bucket clean is to bring what you need and empty bucket straight away, give in a quick rinse with hot water and away you go

everyone where i come from that milks cows uses their own milk unpasturised

    thoroughly recommended

easiest cost reduction you will ever have!

Thanks lads for all those excellent posts !!! Seriously I need some ideas about getting rid of the surplus cream that builds up when you store cows milk in the fridge. We could skim it off and just use whats left but it is very messy. Anyone ever try those containers with the little tap at the bottom ?

We use our own un-pasturised milk taken from the bulk tank that way its already been chilled and filtered. Use the sampler thats in the tank has a hook on the end of it the lower the gallon in and fill it. It has come off the hook a few times in the past followed by a mad scramble to get it back before it floats to the back of the tank :D. Theres always a nice layer of cream on top of the jug in the morning so we just give it a quick stir of a fork and its soon forgotten. The milk in the carton is only white water. Our biggest problem now is getting the gallon buckets we used be able to get them in the old hardware shops and they fit perfectly in the fridge. The only other similar sized one around is the rat bait :D. We ended up getting the last one from a deli i think they had mayonaise or something in it and we asked would they save us one ;)
