    Hi

I am hoping to go to Mary I in Sept 2011 to do the B.Ed.I have a question about the gaeltacht part, which 1st yrs do in June. How many weeks do we spend there? And which gaeltacht do we attend?

    Thanks

I believe it's 3 weeks. It certainly was for me, back in 2008. :)

There should be a range of choices available in terms of different Gaeltachts. I ended up in Minaird in Corcha Dhuibhne and had 3 amazing weeks there.

I went to Inis Meáin (Aran Islands). You can go to somewhere in Tír Chonaill (Donegal) as well AFAIK, but nobody does.

I really liked it... others didn't... others were too drunk to notice the difference:P.

I'm not sure if the other Gaeltacht courses are like it (Corca Dhuibhne 7rl.) but very little Irish was learned. As far as I have heard, the other courses are similar.

The courses have little success in actually teaching and learning Irish if you ask me. It all depends on the effort you make to speak Irish while you're there though.

Thanks for all the info. One more Question. Is it usually the start of June?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 2,503 Mod ✭✭✭✭dambarude

It usually is. There is also an option to do it in August (I think) but nobody usually goes for that.

I think you can also do it in Easter of second year under "special circumstances"

    Now that's what I'd call ultra-organised!

That's exactly what I was thinking - made to be a teacher with those organisational skills!! :D

The three weeks we went were the first three in June (2008) if that's any help. Mary I tends to follow tradition so it'll prob be the same in summer 2012.

Looks like the front of the College is getting a makeover in the near future. Planning permission is being sought for new wall and new entrances by the SCRd.
Alterations to existing boundary wall along South Circular Road and the corner of South Circular Road/Summerville Ave, including widening the existing vehicular corner entrance, repair and reduction in the height of the boundary wall, additional pedestrian entrance, relocation of a pedestrian entrance and widening of an existing pedestrian entrance. The proposed works also includes the revised car parking layout of 29 spaces, footpaths, internal railings, landscaping and associated site works to the college main entrance forecourt at Mary Immaculate College

You spend 3 weeks in the gaeltacht. It is up to you which gaeltacht you attend but generally people go to the gaeltacht that their friends are going to.

I'm very surprised (and disappointed) that so few people are running in the MISU elections, for the President and Vice-president positions in particular.

    Have to agree with Dambarude.

So not one single student out of the present student body wants to be President! Interesting. The year I ran for Welfare and Equality Officer (of which 2 people ran for that position), 6 people went for President, and 4 for Vice President. I remember there was a great buzz around the place coming up to elections. I suspect it will pass off this year hardly unnoticed, which is a pity.

That was my first year here.. I have to agree, it was great. There was actually some debate at hustings. I'm guessing it won't be the same this year.

I won't swell any heads more than they need to be swollen :pac:

I've looked at the manifestos... the incumbents' joint one seems quite good. There's the usual stuff that seems beyond the bounds of their power but all the same, it looks like thought went into it.

Good luck to all running anyway! :)

What the heck is going on with student emails??

My year is currently off campus for two weeks for data collection for fyp, and of course Friday once we'd all left the college all our student email accounts have locked us out, meaning we can't contact our supervisors before our interviews. Lot of people freaking out over it, we assumed it was because passwords had to be changed but we got no warnings that passwords would soon expire, the option to change it is not at the top of the screen like it usually is, and one girl said she changed her password only this week but she still can't get in.

What's going on? :( Very frustrated, timing couldn't possibly be worse.

Yeah! It's driving me demented! Had to ask the head of our department a question about the FYP.

On the plus side of college life at Mary I, Alt week should be fun! Loving this idea, MISU!

I went to Coláiste Loch Con Aortha in the Connemara Gaeltacht 2 years ago in June and had an unreal time, would really recommend it, great craic and classes were actually really good, and there was no problem stayin in bed when we were hungover :P Practically lived on the beach cos the weather was so good :) Hope you enjoy your Gaeltacht time, wherever you go :) Adh mór!

The girl with the dyed red hair playing in the forum at approx 4 pm today was excellent. There was such a buzz around the place it was fantastic, there should be more stuff like this happening around the college more frequently.

Great idea, have never seen the 'steps' so packed.

I wonder who was the lovely bloke who pissed on her cornflakes to make her sing Icy Little Fish? :D

She is very good, she should put the stalker song up on the net.

Yes indeed. Surprised that James O Reilly didn't pull out of the race having been given the Health Ministry during the week. :D

Congrats to all of those elected! It's safe to say that the SU will be in great hands again this year! :D
