What's German like?

I wanted to apply for TSM German in Trinity, but after reading the prospectus I was put off. German is my first language, and I feel kinda sad that it didn't get onto my CAO at all because I feel almost loyal to it in a way.
The thing that put me off was when I saw all the culture and history stuff that you have to study. Although I usually like that stuff and would be happy to study culture and history of any other country, there's something about Germany that I find really boring.
So, my question is, can ANYONE say ANYTHING positive about German that would make me want to change my mind about it?
What is really interesting in the course?

Don't study a language in college if you have no interest in studying that country's history or culture - that's pretty much exactly what it is. You won't like it in that case. I don't know what more you expect.

I don't know how to put that any more bluntly.

well.. It's more that I don't know anything about the history or culture, really. But I absolutely love the language, and I wouldn't mind being a teacher at some stage, which is why I didn't want to rule German out as an option, but there's no information about it anywhere
