Is (5) either Dark City or Requiem for a Dream? I know both famously feature very similar shots to that one.

Only 3 left. And I will give a hint and say that johnny_ultimate's guess earlier was very close.

    (5) is it House of Sand and Fog?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,535 ✭✭✭Raekwon

Yeah I think (5) is a House of Sand and Fog.

It's actually a real head-wrecker because it reminds of of these two images:

    http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/9195/requiemforadream.png

    http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/7045/darkcity.png

The first is Requiem of a Dream and the second is Dark City and ALL three films star Jennifer Connelly as the women at the end of the pier :D

House of Sand and Fog is correct. And of all the shots of Jennifer Connolly standing on a pier looking lonely and beautiful, it's my favourite.

That is possibly the strangest trend in modern cinema.

Also, I haven't seen Le Samourai, but that screenshot is beautiful.

I think there's just something about Connolly that makes directors want to put her at the end of a pier. :D

Yeah, it's the opening shot. Le Samourai is excellent. As is Le Cercle Rouge (there's an American remake in the works I believe). I've never heard Michael Mann list Melville as an influence, but after watching either of these films you'll find it hard to believe he wasn't. Very different styles of directing, but they both have a similar interest in professionalism and minimalism.

"I don't care if we planned this shot as a close-up, that woman is annoying the hell out of me. AS FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE."
