What do NY rappers mean when they are going upstate?

Obviously to be locked away a bit, but where "upstate" in specific. From Wu-Tang to Mobb Depp, to 50 Cent the phrase is used.

It means theyre visiting relatives in new york state to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Bit of fresh air and some outdoor activities.

It's probably Sing Sing but most prisons in NY are upstate. Rikers being a notable exception.
