External hard drive checker

I have a few hard drives i want to hook up as external hard drives to check for errors/bad sectors, having vista and it giving me issues about running chkdsk, is there any good freeware out there that could be used for this purpose?

You could download the Windows 7 Repair Disc and use the recovery console that way.

if windows boots then hdtune will do surface scan on the drives and read some SMART info if the USB controller passes it on
