Near me there is someone with a mid 80's car with no insurance or NCT. I would be concerned if it is roadworthy and what if he crashes or hits someone

There is also the issue that I, and you guys, have to pay insurance so why should one be driving without it but mostly it is a concern re if the car is roadworthy and what if there is an accident plus i think it is a bit cheeky/selfish to drive such a car. But maybe he is short of money. i once drove without tax when short of cash but would never drive without insurance.

    What do you guys think?

Have you actully seen them driving it, or is it parked up?

If it's being driven I'd report it. He's being dangerously irresponsible and what's more free riding on the backs of others who'll have to pick up the tab if he makes a mess.

Yes I'd report it, I'd hate to be hit by an uninsured driver especially with the amount of money I've shelled out over the years for insurance.

Thats the main reason you should report (knock on someone)
In Aussie its simple, you dont have insurance, you will pay all the fees and costs if you cause damages to someone.
Yealousity is the mayor thing why we should report (knock) on everyone :)

    Love the song

    Knocking On Heavens Door :D

You should ALWAYS report if you see something wrong, that makes you perfect ! :)

Secondly - are you sure it is not insured?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,130 ✭✭✭coolbeans

"Yealousity". What the hell is that?
If you mean jealousy don't be childish. Insurance is a social contract ensuring that you can pay for any damage done while driving. Reporting this guy if he is uninsured is perfectly acceptable. I don't want it to be socially OK in the vein of "ah isn't he great, a real cute hoor altogether gettin' away without payin' the insurance". Grow up.

Report it if the guy / gal is driving it. Should it hit your car, you will need to claim off your insurance and pay for it for years while they get off scott free.

Unfortunately im type of person whos taxes and insurance are always paid.
But i would agitate people to do not pay any insurance and tax at all, as this is more than crazy whats going on in this country, recession and they increasing the insurance prices and taxes.
If nobody will pay them at all, they might start to think to come up with more reasonable fees ....

Insurance isn't optional. If you're in a crash caused by an uninsured driver and he protests that he was protesting against the high cost of premia by not paying will you gladly accept this excuse?

My car is mid-80's taxed, insured and NCTed to the hilt...!

You guys seem to have a problem with older cars, looking down your noses out of your 11 reg Quasquai's, Picassos, Scenics and other so called cars..

The issue is that person is uninsured and a liability to others not the fact that he is driving an 80's car..

My answer is report him before he hits some poor innocent

"so-called cars" - love it, and agree!

On topic - report them. Selfishly stupid clowns like that cost insured drivers add between 15% & 20% to our premium each year.

    Really, what a statement lol

We've read lots of stories here when Insurance companies REFUSED to insure people if they didnt accept the price hike
Theres always uninsured vehicles and they dont affect the insurance market imo.
If the Insurance companies were so desperated about money, they would drop the prices and insure EVERYONE !

Your argument is defined by sheer ignorance and a complete and utter absence of logic. I think my work here is done. Never argue with an fool for he'll only drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. :P

Sry but i disagree with you here.

Overall its the opposite, you get paid well if you sell more, thats the global business logic !
But if you think like local, its nearly impossible to prove the opposite :D
Life shows clearly that big businesses who sell more for cheap, survive in Ireland.
Its a common sense in the world market and nothing to do with my personal absence of logic :)

I'm rather dumbfounded that the issue of legally insured drivers having to fund uninsured drivers who have crashes is a source of amusement for you.

The price of bread and spuds also went up; this didn't entitle people who wanted bread or spuds at the old prices to pay the old prices at the supermarket checkout.

    If someone wants motor insurance they have choices;
    • either pay the premium quoted
    • get a cheaper quote
    • or don't drive.

They may be there now, I don't agree that there will always be uninsured vehicles on our roads. Our aim should be to eliminate them. If you believe that uninsured vehicles and drivers don't effect the insurance market, then perhaps you need to educate yourself better about the current state on the insurance market in Ireland, and our need for the MIBI, funded directly from premiums paid by legally insured drivers.

Motor insurance is a legal necessity and in general the premiums charged reflect the risk undertaken.

I am not a fan of insurance companies, I see them as a necessary evil, but in order to effect an immediate reduction in accidents, deaths, uninsured claims, and in premiums overall, the easiest thing to do would be to get all uninsured drivers off the road, IMHO.

Dob him in. I'm sick and tired of these people who think they can hit walls, bend a phone pole or scrape a car ... and run - usually calling 'daddy' to get the tractor out of a night to get the car home and into the back yard where nobody will see it. This leaves the wall owner, €ircom or the unfortunate party with a bill - quite a big one if it's a dry-stone wall that needs repairing.
Driving is NOT a right but a privilege - earned and funded. No funds? Then get off the road! We always end up paying for these lamers.

    Report it.
Saw a guy early one Sunday morning drive out of a side street at speed nearly hitting a car with an old couple in it.
Reached for my phone to report it but didnt have it with me.

Cut a long story short, heard thet evening the guy crashed head on into a car killing the driver, he also died and to this day I regret not having that bloody phone with me.

You could stop him driving around uninsured another way too - smash up his car tonight. Best part is, he has no insurance to cover it!

    *May not be legal....

FYI - The Gardai will tend to do nothing.

My gf has reported 3 uninsured and untaxed vehicles owned and in daily use by her neighbours.

She has made 2 separate complaints to the Guards who will not do anything about it.

She even asked the cops if it was okay to drive without tax and insurance. They replied that it was not. But still they won't do anything about it.

I cannot understand why they won't. Anyone got any ideas???
