Speaking of democracy, FF have denied the nation that for about 18 months or so in blocking the bye-elections that's what I call double standards.

    I agree.

A Bye election should be called within 3 months of the need for one unless a general election is due within five months of the time for the need of a bye election. No argument on that people have the right to be represented.

    Just got this from politics.ie.
12:30 News on RTE1 reports Cowen is in all likelihood remaining on! Government sources say no statement on Cowen's future to be made today
    .

Nice to see dignity is the top of their agenda.

Excellent news. This means there will have to be a push against him splintering them more. If reports are true of what Martin and Hanifan said then he has to remove them from the Cabinet.

Coughlan on RTE Radio 1 now has said Cowen will be making a statement in a couple of hours.
She should know being his drinkin buddy.

Just listening to it now. All I hear is waffle, waffle and more waffle with the odd "in the best interests of the country" phrase thrown in there.

Fianna Fail are a very cowardly bunch, not one of the FF TDs had the courage to call Cowen out for his failures, when Cowen is eventually pushed no doubt there will be a phalanx of great leaders making themselves available to replace him:D

at least we know one certainty in these uncertain times:

That is, that the next leader of FF is a certified coward.

Yes, pure gobshyte of a politician.
I heard her sneak a little bit of the now failed Lehmans mantra in amongst the bullshyte.

She uttered something like "If everyone else was as open and honest/transparent as the FF Green Govt...."

I'm really glad I wasn't eating at the time, I would have choked.

She actually said something like that? What a conveniently blind, stupid sod!

...Sorry, I take back the "stupid" bit. I suspect she knows exactly where she is talking through her ass - and I suspect why!

Please point her to my thread on FF cronyism (HERE) and ask her smug face to be open and forth coming about that one issue alone!
For fcuks sake! What a load of crap from her - and I'm reining in my angry words here!

Cowen is "fighting on" and an announcement will be made around 6pm, in time for the news

Statement due at 4pm - reports.

    Edit: 4.30 - BBC.

Cowen is to make a statement at the Alexander Hotel in Dublin at 4.30.

i reckon he'll stay as leader but announce he's resigning for next election

He'll be ousted surely with that position.

Anyone know where the President is today?

I reckon he's going nowhere today anyway.. A taoiseach doesnt resign in a hotel.

It'll be interesting to see Martin and Hanafin's reaction to this one. They cannot act as Cowen's ministers if they have no confidence in him. He cannot keep them as ministers for the same reason...

Although thats assuming we're talking about people who put country before personal gain.. so maybe they'll all be happy no matter what happens. No election.. no problem!

The only reason it is being held in a hotel is because this is a party-politics issue, nothing really surprising about that. Although it is possible he will make a statement in gov buildings prior to the Alexander Hotel.

I suspect he will stand down as FF leader and remain as Taoiseach to oversee the bringing in of the Finance Bill. This will allow the to-be FF leader to focus entirely on the election.

On one hand I want him to resign with his reputation in tatters however if he stays then what could be a very nasty succession could kick off and damage them even further and then the mother-load Eamon O'Cuiv could become the new leader. Bye bye FF :D

Yes but I think if the Taoiseach was going to resign, regardless of the reason, it'd be done in Government buildings.

Indeed - I think that would occur if he was standing down as Taoiseach.

Although now I am hearing that there will be a press statement at government buildings at 4PM followed by a questions and answers session at the Alexander Hotel at 4:30PM.

Will all this be live on tv. My tv is broken and would have to get my ass to the pub to watch it.

It'll be streamed live at the below link. Just refresh the page around the time the press conference is supposed to be starting at and the option to play it will come up.

    http://www.rte.ie/live/

It says it'll be broadcast at 4.30 on the site.
