I'm not up for paying, so I'll sit that out, and I don't really mind not organising the tournament, blinn, normally no one wants to do it, so I offered.

Ok guys, was playing starcraft earlier in the 5 star, it was a bit slow to load and connect, but once the game was running, on all low settings it had a pretty high frame rate.
I was playing a 1v1 with jhax and latency wasn't a problem either.
But i got 3 error messages while playing the game, something about the ATI accelerator failing, the first two just tabbed the game out and i could continue my match with jhax no problem, just a little lag on my end. But the third time the game wouldn't go back in. Unfortunately i didn't have time to stick around for another game as i had to pick up the gf.
But i had a little chat with the owner.

    Here's the info:
He has 32 pc's in the XGC center on liffey street, he's charging 300 euro for 32 people for the 12 hours, 10pm to 10am.
He has Starcraft 2 installed on all the machines and all the machines are identical. Keyboard + mouse + headset with a large enough screen, but we won't be availing of the high resolution for sc2 :)
As for the crashing issue, he says that the pc's in the 5 star are run 24/7, so it was bound to crash, we can restart the pc's in the XGC if there are any issues.
He also said that when they have dota tournaments, they frequently save the matches as they go along, just in case someone's machine decides to crash, so perhaps we should get that kinda thing rolling.

He has a bunch of ps3's and xbox 360's in the xgc aswell, if people get bored. Plus SC1, wc3, cod 4, cs 1.6 and source? eve online, WoW and a bunch of others i didn't look for.

He did mention that he doesn't know how the broadband will hold up with 32 players playing at once. But i was in the cafe playing online with lots of people around online at the same time, and latency and lag weren't really an issue.

I'm ready to drop in a deposit tomorrow of 150, if you guys wanna give me the go ahead to book the XGC for the 28th of jan :)

Additional crash info: There was no fps lag or in game lag before the crash, just a cut to black screen + a warning saying "auto-detect" and then it went back into the game :o

cheers xios. great to have someone local up there!

yeah go ahead and book it, we have 30 people confirmed and i have most mobile numbers.

Ill send out a mass PM to everyone on the list in a few minutes.

pc's sound average at best, but if people want to bring their laptops, then please do. it wont be a problem to connect them on the night.

I, too, am going to be dropping in at around 5.30 PM. Going to hop on the 4.42 bus from Maynooth after my last exam so if you want to hold on 'til around then we could talk to the owner etc in a bit more detail. We could also have a look at a few of the other PCs.

In the XGC now, anyone else here can identify me by the giant high-vis jack and motorbike helmet, will be here till 6:15 or so, maybe 6:30.

The place is cosy enough, fridge full of coke and some pringles from what i can see.

What are the graphics cards? Better than they were reporting in 5-star?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

What flavour of pringle? This is far more urgent than the status of the gfx cards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 945 ✭✭✭gearoidof

And what kind of coke, that's even more important!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,903 ✭✭✭Blacktie.

    I'm in

Ya know the pringle flavoured pringles, those.

As for the gfx card, they're the same as the 5 star, but i played a 1v1 online in kulas ravine, ZvZ both with 150 food we had a battle, not so much a problem for those pc's, so it should be fine for the lan. Unless murphy's law kicks in.

Those that wanna bring laptops, you're gonna need to say that you are bringing one and you also gotta show up a little bit earlier to get set up, as the guy who knows all the techie stuff won't be staying much later than 10pm.

We've booked the XGC on Liffey Street. They have 32 pc's, all the same spec and then a few slots for laptops, you'll need an ethernet slot on the lappie.

Good news also, they have age of empires 2 on the pc's, so that should be lol-tastic. Also Dawn of War-Dark Crusade, AoE3, Starcraft brood war etc. so as i've mentioned before, it **** goes wrong with sc2, we've a lot to keep ourselves occupied for the night :)

2nd Also, The venue has a bunch of xbox and ps3 units, (by units i mean no games or controllers, just the box itself) So if you wanna bring some controllers and games along, you're welcome to. But there will be another group there using the xbox's for some xbox-ey reason, so there may not be any available. If you wanna use a ps3/xbox it'd be an extra 10 euro for the whole night. The owner will let a couple people use a machine for free, but if lotsa people wanna use consoles, they gotta pay :(

so i need royal to do a revised attendance list, also can someone draw up a tourney plan with the revised peeps and can they run it on the night/? :)

closing this thread, and making a NEW one :D

oh i love doing this.... :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,824 ✭✭✭RoyalMarine

OK people. the deadline is approaching.

Xios went to the XGC today and paid the deposit.

    the venue:

    XGC on Liffey Street.

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=7+lower+liffey+street+dublin&aq=&sll=53.349527,-6.263237&sspn=0.123579,0.363579&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=7+Lower+Liffey+St,+Dublin+1,+County+Dublin,+Ireland&ll=53.346978,-6.263344&spn=0.008044,0.022724&t=h&z=16&iwloc=A

There are 32 spaces, and room for a few with laptops. NOT EVERYONE CAN BRING A LAPTOP.

However, xios played on the computers that were using, and he says the game plays decent enough.

    laptop rules:

1> you MUST have an up to date antivirus installed.
2> you MUST bring your own ethernet cable. (no wireless available)
3> YOU and YOU alone are responsible for it. XGC take NO responsibility for any loss or damage to ANY personal belongings brought to the centre.
    4> DONT forget your charger!

    OTHER important notes:

1> IF your bringing your own mouse, keyboard or headset, then please make sure they are USB.
2> IF you do bring any of the above, then please make sure you have it either marked or labelled so it can be identified as yours. hopefully no one will have the same as you, but IF they do, we dont want a mix up!
3> Make sure you bring some money with you. you will be required to pay €10 for entry fee. and then you are responsible for your own food and SOFT-drinks for the night.

IF you want to bring your own laptop, then please reply here stating that you do, AND you NEED TO BE IN THE XGC EARLIER THAN 10PM FRIDAY NIGHT.
IF you could be there around 9PM it would be appreciated because the staff of the XGC will need to configure it to work on their network, and the person capable of doing so wont be staying later than 10pm that night.

so thats me down for one.

So only usb headsets yeah? There is no onboard sound card? :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,824 ✭✭✭RoyalMarine

    The tournament.

I have taken ALL names given to me so far, and entered them into a program i have that creates a tournament tree for us.
Its easily used, and all results are simply entered and the program does all the work for us to calculate everything.

    Tournament structure.

I have pre programmed 3 tournaments for the night.

    Tournament 1:

this will be a "single elimination knockout" However, everyone who looses a game will play in a knocked out cup.
This gives everyone 2 games to play for this tournament.

ALL games apart from the semi final, 3rd place play off and the final will be bo1. the semi, 3rd place, and final will be bo3.

    Tournament number 2:

The program will then generate RANDOM teams for a 2v2 tournament.

Same rules again as the first tournament.

    Tournament number 3:

This will be the final one i arrange for the night.

It will be a full 8 player FFA.

The program will select at RANDOM 8 players to play a match, then another 8 etc.

IF we get 32 players to go to the LAN, then this will be 4 games.

the top 2 players from each FFA will go into a final battle royal special.

Any suggestions are more than welcome.

When i spoke to the manager, i asked him can we bring headsets, mice, keyboards.

he said only if they are USB.

Put me down for the time being but I might have to work that night, I'll let you know either way. Also in the FFA, how do you determine who comes second? Last man standing? By final game scores?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,006 ✭✭✭Ramza

Cool beans, I'll be in the XGC anyways that day ^^

    See you guys then!

I'm gonna bring my laptop. FFA tourney sounds like it should be good craic. Could have an off-race fun tourney if there's time too, if people are interested.

He told me that there is usb slots on the front of the pc. He said don't unplug the original mice and keyboards cause he doesn't wanna have to plug them all back in on satuday morning :)
