I think the animal pushes down the floating ball to get access to the water. When they're finished drinking the ball pops back up as the water level rises again, thus forming an airtight seal and keeping out the frost. I'm gussing there's a regular ballcock at the back to fill it.

Haven't seen them for myself, just heard some people talking about them.

Also heard that in parts of Canada it's common to bury pipes, 3 foot down I think, with heating elements wrapped around the pipes as they go into the ground, until they are deep enough for the frost not to reach. The element continues on up the pipe and into the drinker and goes in a loop around it. Once the frost comes, on comes the element, and prevents the whole thing freezing.

A few more winters like this and we might have to do the same :eek::D
