Sony's 5 year warranty - does it apply to gifted items from across the border?

I recently was given a new Sony TV by a family member in the North and they didn't know what the story was with the 5 year warranty down here. 1) If something happens to my TV, am I in a sticky situation or does the manufacturer warranty apply universally? 2) If something happened to it, would they want proof of purchase…

Surely you should read the terms and conditions attached to the warranty. As I understand it, it's up to the manufacturer to specify if their warranty is transferable to a different owner or to an different jurisdiction.
