Hey guys I have not forgotten about The Great Linux switch and I apologise for the lack of updates lately if you were waiting with jaws agape. I have had a crazy week with a funeral, new job and trying to figure some stuff out on my site fudgez.net. I will be back to regular updating and posting more guides etc by next week :)

I am very Sad to say I have failed I did not want to update the site about it because I am a little ashamed. I could not fix my video playback problem, apparently it was just undoable with my laptop (I even have slight problems in Windows) I did not feel it was fair to report this as a failing of linux because my friends all use Ubuntu with no problems to play video. I want to thank you guys for your support and again apologize for having to quit. Maybe another time on another machine :)

... or maybe try running one of the other suggested distros to see if they play any nicer with your hardware.

What you could have is a failing of Ubuntu and not a failing of Linux. I am not saying this is true as I have no idea what the problem is, but what you met may not be a Linux problem at all.

    regards.

Yeah, I gave up on wireless internet under linux for my laptop (even moved the router to my room), it just didn't work under Ubuntu, or Linux Mint, then I plugged in Linux Mint Debian and it just started working!

It's a pity to see people who clearly want to give linux a shot giving up because they find it too user unfriendly (For whatever reasons)

I think it's important that you continue with the experiment as, having made a concentrated effort you weren't able to get the installation doing what it's supposed to.

Whatever about your own competencies (and they're obviously not those of a complete newbie) this is a failing of the OS/distro on some level - usability or compatibility which should be addressed rather than overlooked. An operating system can only improve if faults are looked at. I'm assuming your computer hardware isn't actually defective in this instance.

At the very least I think you should post about it on your blog. Nothing to be ashamed of, computers never work 100% of the time and even the most experienced Linux users will come up against one problem or another. Publishing the precise details of the problem might help others to figure out how to fix it. As long as you make it clear that the problem is not a general one with Linux or Ubuntu.

In the meantime, try another distro!

I suppose it might encourage windows users to switch and not believe all the fub being spread by Microsoft, Apple and Oracle. I do wish that there was better driver support. I happily dumped my copy of windows vista when I switched, I'm now happily typing on my kubuntu desktop.

not to be smart but why not make it more user friendly?

Now that you mention it I did not have this problem when I ran mint....

I might retry it.... maybe throw up a post tomorrow about the fault and get to installing Mint by the weekend.

My Hardware is sound under Windows 7 so its definatly a fault with Ubuntu I even had a huge Linux head look at it for me to no avail.... I really hope I can get one working because I am soooo sick of windows.
