Will passive 3D glasses work with an 'active' system

I'm looking at getting the Optoma 3D-XL box to sit alongside my Optoma HD66 projector bought in the US (it's the HD67 in UK).
The 'active' 3D glasses that come with this are very expensive so I was wondering if anyone knows if standard passive glasses that you get in the cinema will work with such a system or does it have to be actively linked.
    Any help appreciated.

    Actives only AFAIK

Yeah, active and passive glasses can't be interchanged.

If it's an active system, then it'll need the right active glasses (and the right ones for your model, as active glasses are not all equal sadly).

Thanks for the answer. I think that rules out getting the box as there will be five of us using it and the glasses are too expensive.
