Does the processor matter much?

I see 2 laptops both identical except for processor and price, one has an amd phenom dual core the other amd athlon dual core, the athlon is £100 cheaper it runs at 2.1 ghz and the phenom at 2.7ghz will this matter much for gaming if they have a pretty good video card.

Yes, Phenom is lots faster than Athlon, even at the same clock speed its faster.
What video card? Hopefully You're not considering onboard. What games are You hoping to play? Post a link to both laptops

I am looking at two laptops same make and model only difference is the processor, Im looking to play some games on medium quality like left 4 dead and call of duty. They have a ati radeon HD 5470 I know its pretty low end but it will do,

Some games are cpu intensive and some games are graphics card intensive. But cpu is being put on more strain recently.

Whatever the GPU lacks the CPU is expected to make up for. The CPU does a ton of the work involved in operating your computer. It Matters.
