    http://www.rte.ie/about/pressreleases/2010/1124/faircity241110.html
Over 721,000 viewers tuned in to Fair City last night to watch the climax of the domestic abuse storyline between Suzanne and Damien, consolidating its position as THE most popular soap on any television channel in Ireland this autumn - beating Eastenders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Ros na Run*. With an average viewership of 489,700 ( Live + VOSDAL)** and 31% share so far this autumn, Fair City has increased its average audience by 22,000 (Live data only) viewers, compared to the same period last year.

Brigie de Courcy, Executive Producer, Fair City, said: "We're delighted with this fantastically strong performance and being number one, particularly given the class and credentials of the soap company we're keeping! This is down to the talent - of our storywriting team, cast and crew. We've done a lot of work in honing our craft and delivering what ultimately makes the difference - stories that really resonate and grip our viewers. Thanks to the audience for their loyalty and interest and we look forward to continuing to deliver great story for our licence fee payers."

In the making over an eighteen month period, the storyline has been carefully researched and developed, involving extensive liaison with key bodies involved in this area such as Amen, Women's Aid and Stop Seeing Red.

The storyline, in which the female character is the aggressor has gripped the nation since September when the first violent scene between Suzanne and Damien was broadcast. Damien's abuse was revealed to the Carrigstown community last week and last night Suzanne was shunned by her neighbours and rejected by her father. Will the dramatic return of Suzanne's sister, feisty Yvonne, who has come back to support her sister, bring a change in attitude towards her? Will it be sufficient to rehabilitate Suzanne in the eyes of the Carraigstown community, and most importantly in the eyes of her husband?

Havn't been on in a while - busy. Fair City has been brilliant recently. Delighted Yvonne is back. I guessed months ago that one of the Bishop's would be killed off, can never distinquish (dubious spelling)them apart from Zumo. I think all of the Bishop's are brilliant, and will be sorry to see one of them go, but really looking forward to the return of Richie Lennon. I hope he sticks around longterm!:)

    The deadline is tomorrow.

JPLiz, where did you hear that one of the Bishop boys is going to be killed off? Are you just stirring? Or is that for real?

    Maybe it's Zumo!!!:eek::eek:

What the heck was that at the end? Did anything even happen? It looked like Damien, Dolores and the rest were just having a conversation.

Did someone say a while ago that Mark does something bad to Suzanne - or was that just some wild guess?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,694 ✭✭✭DeepBlue

Thought they made a major mistake last night.
When Yvonne revealed that Damo got his leg over with Neasa all the guys in the bar should have been going "Ya jammy ba$tard!!" followed by wolf whistles, claps on backs and major pint buying all round. The look on Yvonne's face would have been priceless.

But soaps are generally aimed at women so obviously they couldn't go this route..........:(

Yea i was like WTF happened there? Why were they all standing outside and then bela just coming over and saying what he said. It felt like they left out a scene or something

    Sure ya have to laugh!

To say the last few weeks have been grim is an understatement.

Poor Damien is a shell of a man, Bela's heart is broken, and I have a bad feeling about Christy and Carol's relationship.

But there are some chinks of light shining through; love is blossoming, Christmas is coming and bringing some familiar faces, and Carrigstown's biggest diva is back this week.

And of course, we still have the quick wit of some residents of Fair City to keep us entertained.

    Jo to Dermot:
Jo - "Don't lie to me, I'm not NAMA"

Bela and Esther discussing Dermot's hunger strike:
Bela - "He's not doing it for the diet".
Esther - "His body doesn't know that. Mark my words, Dermot Fatty".

Philip may have been in the drinks cabinet..!
Jo - "That's right Dermot, sure I'm a divil for the vodka"

When Keith had Uná's name tattooed on his behind:
Uná - "Ah you remembered the fada".

    Niamh to Dermot:
    "You're a politician, aren't you?"
    Dermot - "A recovering one"

    Carol and Suzanne.
Carol - "Go on. It's for the community centre."
Suzanne - "Only if you persuade Louie to go for a drink with us."
Carol - "You're chatting up the hamburger? INDICATES AVI
When there's steak at the table?"

Jo and Dermot speculated as to whether the Dillons are swingers:
Jo - "At least I didn't stand there having a laugh with him. He has designs on me.
Dermot - "Or me. It's not all about you, you know.

Yvonne to Connie on their wedding in Vinos.
Yvonne - "I'm gonna spend the most important day of my life where I spend every other day of my life!"

Dont know why she asked that. They are not married. That story line was a piece of shambolic piece of scipt writing and story planning. If they wanted to make it more realisitic why did they not get someone licenced to marry people to perform the cermony. That said, i know where the writers were coming from and trying to highlight, and in a way would agree with if it was allowed, but not the way it was done with in Fair City.

Civil marriage is not allowed in Ireland at that point, it was just done for her father who was dying. It was just a blessing with no legal rights because they were unable to go to Belfast to get it officially done.

It is just a soap opera ;):D

True, but you would expect them to get things right. Arent they suppose to depict reality, which is what makes them so popular.

Well Nessa thought they were married she wasn't going to be pedantic about the whole thing.

Nessa: I know your not married because the wedding was before the Civil Marriage Act but I was just wonder how your pre-marital partner is these days?
