Acer 5610 wont boot even in safe mode

All i get is a blue screen. It says a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage. Have tried loading in safe mode. No joy. Can anyone help please. I never got any cds with the laptop.

When you boot hold down the ALT + F10 button and it should boot into the recovery disk. Good luck;)

The os is windows vista. Tried holding Alt and F10 but it brings me back to start windows normally or start windows repair. When i click either of these it brings it back to the blue screen.

Did You reinstall OS or is it which came with factory defaults. Try ALT+F8.

Did'nt reinstall anything its my daughters laptop she went to switch it on last night and this happened. No joy with Alt and F8 either just makes a beeping noise. Then brings me into safe mode with an option to repair but that just brings it back to the blue screen again. Thanks for the replies everything is worth a try.

Can you be more specific as to what error message is on the screen.
Is there any codes (0x etc.)
If do post them.

If you can download ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/) burn it to a CD and boot from it.

When it boots up you should be able to access the hard drive look in the Windows folder for a folder called minidumps.

If there are any minidumps there upload them.

This is exactly what it says on blue screen.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen apppears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or sofware. Disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.

If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select safe mode.

As usual there are some strange fixes from Microsoft one of which is to format your hard drive and reinstall windows (Which will essentially DELETE all of your files so do not do it).

First off it may be best to have someone look at it but if you are willing to give it a try we might be able to repair it.

Do you have access to any of the following:

External Hard Drive.
USB Hard Drive Enclosure for 2.5" Hard Drive.
Windows 7 Disk (of any description, even beta).

Don't have an external hard drive or a usb one. My brother has a copy of windows 7 could i use that.

You can because you are not actually installing it.

Boot from the Windows 7 Disk (You may need to press F12 to get boot menu read the Acer screen when laptop is turned on to find out the key combination).

Once the Windows 7 loads you should get as far as the language selection.

Cancel the setup and restart (remove the CD).

The Computer may try to repair itself and hopefully you will be able to boot into Windows then.

Downloaded this and its now installing it let me connect to the internet and is downloading updates whle installing.

Its giving me three options

Install alongside other operating systems

Erase and use entire disk

Specify partitions manually (advanced)

Have'nt a clue where to go from here

Your Acer presumeably has a recovery partition, and if you install Ubuntu there is a good chance you render the recovery partition useless. I know you havent been able to get the recovery partition working yet, but I wouldn't give up on it yet.

Ubuntu LiveCD works fine in 'live' mode - meaning it is just running in RAM and from the CD drive. Thats what I would do for now, as you try and find out what is wrong with your windows install. You can test out your hardware, run checks on the HDD etc from Ubuntu.

It sounds like you have already downloaded and burnt Ubuntu to a CD?
So when you boot into it, just select the option that says 'try Ubuntu without installing it' (or similar).

Then the first thing you should do is to access the HDD (under 'places') and backup anything that is important to you.

Dont worry about all the questions thats what the forum is for.

If you are sure there is nothing important you could try to do a fresh install of Vista or recover from the special recovery partition.

The easiest choice will be to use the recovery partition if that doesnt work we can try the Vista DVD if you have one.

Follow the instructions below taken from the manual found here:

Before performing a restore operation, please check the BIOS settings.
1 Check to see if Acer disk-to-disk recovery is enabled or not.
2 Make sure the D2D Recovery setting in Main is Enabled.
3 Exit the BIOS utility and save changes. The system will reboot.
Note: To activate the BIOS utility, press <F2> during POST.

To enable disk-to-disk recovery (hard disk recovery), activate the BIOS utility,
then select Main from the categories listed at the top of the screen. Find D2D
Recovery at the bottom of the screen and use the <F5> and <F6> keys to set this
value to Enabled.

To start the recovery process:
1 Restart the system.
2 While the Acer logo is showing, press <Alt> + <F10> at the same time to
enter the recovery process.
3 Refer to the onscreen instructions to perform system recovery.
Important! This feature occupies 3 to 4 GB in a hidden partition
on your hard disk.

Don't know what i'm after doing wrong. When i try to boot up all i'm getting is a black screen with a flashing cursor.

What was the last thing you have done. Did you change BIOS settings, if so either undo the changes or reset to default settings should be there.

I wouldn't worry about it too much if you are going to reinstall Vista.

Do you have a Vista DVD.

If so boot from the Vista DVD

Go to system repair

Go To command prompt

and run the following commands one after the other (press Enter after each):
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /fixmbr

Wont work and it wont let me install the windows vista

This is what it says when i press and enter

bootrec /fixboot
Element not found.

bootrec /fixmbr
The operation completed successfully.

And this is what it says when i try to insall the windows vista
Windows cannot open the required file

\Sources\Install.wim. The file does not exist. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code Ox80070002.

Ok Try the repair again in command prompt try

Out of interest did you try
bootrec /fixboot
after the other command ran successfully

bootrec /RebuildBcd

As regards a fresh install looks like an issue with the DVD, try cleaning the disk, if the above command doesnt work.

Tried this a lot of writing came up and it said it was sucessful. Then it resarted and now it wont even let me boot from the cd drive. There is a flashing underscore.

Above that it says BOOTMGR is missing

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart but the same message comes up.

Got back in. Went to install windows it said it was installing then it stopped after it copied files.

Now this is all i get on start

You can download a Vista repair CD perfectly legally. You might have more luck with it than the disc you are trying. It won't do a full install, but it will attempt to repair whatever is preventing your current installation from booting.

(do you know what version of Vista you have? It is probably the 32-bit x86 version)

However it involves downloading a torrent and burning it to a CD as an ISO image, which you may need help with. Ideally get someone techy to do it for you. If not, report back and someone here can assist you step-by-step.
