How to connect Samsung LCD Monitor with Satellite receiver

I have a samsung LCD monitor Samsung B2230H with HDMI input. I want to connect his to my slivercrest / comag SL45 satellite receiver. The satellite receiver too has HDMI output. When I connect them up the monitor shows the message: Not optimum mode. Recommended mode 1920x1080 60 Hz. I don't see any video. Any suggestions on how to get this working?

The SL45 is an SD receiver so would be outputting 720x576 (50Hz probably)

Your Samsung is a computer monitor, so it should be matched to a PC outputting 1920 x 1080 at 60Hz. Computer monitors look best at their native resolution. It's not a TV so it probably won't upscale images fed to it via HDMI.

I've had a look at the user manual for your monitor:)

Good news is that it will accept 720p, 1080i or 1080p images from an HD device like a set top box (or blu ray player or high-end DVD).

Bad news is that your SL45 is standard definition only. HDMI doesn't mean HD, so you're out of luck with connecting the SL45, unfortunately:(

Would this work If I get a satellite receiver which has HD output?
Would HDMI to DVI converter cable work?

It's really meant for use as a computer monitor. I assume that you have it connected to a PC usually and that you are experimenting with it for TV use? It's only a 21" (or thereabouts) screen, so it's not really suited for distance viewing, but rather as an up-close HD PC monitor. You will have to connect speakers to it to hear the sound from the set top box or DVD player. I would suggest you borrow, rather than buy anything until you are happy that it will work with this monitor. If it was me, I would use it only as a PC monitor.

DVI would be equivalent to HDMI in that it is a digital video signal, but it does not carry any sound. A DVI cable / converter would not sort out your issue with the SL45. DVI is normally used between PC and monitor as a digital replacement for VGA.

Very few Computer monitors, even if sold as "HD Widescreen 1920 x1080" are any use for HD or HDMI in Europe, because most are a fixed 60Hz 60fps progressive.

You need a real HDTV that can do 1920 x1080i 50Hz 25fps, For European HD.

Also the the cheap HDMI output DVD players and SD Sat receivers are often dishonest misleading marketing. A SCART version with RGB works as well. Hardly any have upscalling and none have upscalling as good as most HDTV sets. Monitors usually don't have true deinterlacers or upscalling.

Ok geetha, now that watty has re-affirmed everything I have previously written, maybe you will reconsider your options. I'm not sure whether you purchased the monitor in the expectation of watching television in conjunction with a set top box, but it's not the way to go. If you want to watch television, buy a TV.

I bought the monitor from dabs to use with my PC. Its selling quite cheap at €160. Since the PC is in my bedroom I thought of connecting it to a satellite receiver too

. I borrowed a sky box hd from a friend and the monitor works perfectly with the sky box. I am using the hdmi interface between the devices.
I know the monitor is a bit small (23 "), but the quality of the video on it is very good and I will try it a while and if its comfortable to view, I might consider buying a used sky box. I hope lidl takes back the SL45
