Some people use Open Directory http://www.dmoz.org/ in the belief it will get you a better/faster listing in Google, but besides that do people use web directories anymore?

The last time I used one was circa 1999. Search engines have become so good at finding what you're looking for they've become pretty much rendered directories redundant.

How does the Google algorithm feel about them?

Anything I've read on the matter has been based upon speculation - I don't recall ever having read anything from Google themselves on the subject but they do use Open Directory listings too - http://www.google.com/dirhp
