I don't care what road you were on and poor visibility is even more of a reason to leave a gap for following cars to overtake into (not a braking distance gap for your own car) if you weren't going to pass the tractor yourself...
Once again, you are the bad driver in this situation.

Why in gods name would i try to over take it on an unfamiliar back road in the lashing rain, and nobody should be overtake on a back road anyway!! Stupidity if i ever heard it

You dont have to overtake, you can drive at any speed you wish, just pull over and let other people pass or leave enough room between you and the car in front for someone to overtake you if they wish. Then no one hast to overtake 4 cars. Simples!
In normal road and traffic conditions, keep up with the pace of the traffic flow
while obeying the speed limit. While you must keep a safe distance away from
the vehicle in front, you should not drive so slowly that your vehicle
    unnecessarily blocks other road users
. If you drive too slowly, you risk frustrating
other drivers, which could lead to dangerous overtaking
    .

Driving is way easier on a motorway compared to a backroad. No hidden turns, no hidden onroads, signposts and lighting everywhere, room to manouevre (generally speaking).

There would also be the minor matter that there (normally) isn't anyone coming against you :D:D:D

Anyone got any stats on this??
Like number of accident to the number of cars on the road?
Living in both Dublin and the hills of donegal, Dublin for the most past is just like any other city or at least I could not argue one case over the other. But living in Donegal I would say car accidents seem to be a regular thing, every few months I will get a call "Such and such has been in an accident" some of which as of late have been pretty serious... When I think of tragic events to hit my town or surrounding area, it is always car accidents. But in my 15 years of driving i have only every been stopped by the gardi maybe 3/4 times? Driving from Donegal to Dublin I have been stopped in the north a whole lot more, I was stopped three times in the north in the one trip. I dunno about elsewhere in ireland but we seems to have an increase of people in sup'ed up cars driving about like loons.

As far as i know Donegal has one of the worst records for serious accidents per capita. Probably got a lot to do with the state of the roads up there

Roads are pretty bad, but I feel like it is a little bit like the wilde west.
I mean every weekend when I am home I will witness someone doing something crazy!! Evern looking at the main roads you can see the doughnut shapes burnt into the road. I would say the biggest problem I know of back home... Just do not see a lot being done to stop it.

From anecdotal evidence i hear the locals "horse it on" up there alright. Back to my earlier point about inappropriate speed......

What has unfamiliar got to do with anything? If there's a suitable straight and there's broken white line on your side, then overtaking is safe once there's nothing coming the other way.

If the rain makes you nervous then as M5 says you should hang back 2-3 car lengths from the tractor and allow following traffic the opportunity to leap frog both past you and the tractor.
What ends up happening all the time is the tractor and the couple of cars behind turn into a slow moving convoy as more and more faster moving traffic bunches up behind. That is, as you say yourself, suicide to overtake in in those conditions.
I reckon it's just this type of scenario that leads to a lot of accidents on the road...

Another point about keeping back that distance is that it's easier to see the opposite side of the road ahead to allow you to move out to overtake and you can also build up speed for the manoveur on your side of the road instead of the very dangerous thing people here do: rolling out to the other side of the road and just pressing the accelerator to the floor and hoping nothing comes the other way in the intervening time it takes to get past..

If we are in the mood for stereotyping "Irish Drivers are the worst in Europe etc" why not say the English drink tea like its going out of fashion, French people are frogs and Italians love pasta. Considering the size of the motorways and roundabouts in neighbouring European cities id say we get off easy and are lucky we dont have such big roads to drive on as we would always be trying to find you and show you our crappy driving :D and you would eventually move to Paris or Berlin etc and have twenty cars honking at you going around a roundabout the size of China :D

    RSA for the win!!

but on the exit i was taking we met at the lights again and me syicking to the limit we got there at the same time therefore there is no point.

In the highly likely event that he had got to the lights before they turned red would you have then concluded that there is a point to speeding?

    do you ever learn??

In every country they print similar rubbish. The frogs are told they are the worst, as are the roast beefs and so on.

Same with the standard of living index. Waken up.

The majority of dangerous and irresponsible manoeuvres I see in Dublin are usually caused by non-Dublin regged cars being driven by guys under 25.

Disagree, try riding a motorbike through the city, cut-ups, ignorance at junctions, roundabouts, red light runners and straight out intimidation comes from all angles, nothing to do with reg or age but there's a gretaer proportion of D reg cars in the city.

Having driven in the city over the years in various county reg cars I can also say D reg drivers are some of the most unforgiving and aggressive, if, god help you, you weren't familiar with what lane you need to be in (it's confusing for all) and needed to change you'll be hearing a chorus of horns and shouting, road manners in Dublin seems to be something of a lost art. BTW I drive a D reg myself lol.

That's a good point, but to be honest, unforgiving is generally safer. Slowing down to let people in or giving up the right of way is not in line with the rules of the road.

I wasnt gona reply to your completely baseless comment. A couple of trips up the M50 and Irish Drivers are the worst in europe. Give it up man, There are plenty of idiots on irish roads. Like there are in irish forums.

But the stats (as of 2005) puts us in about 11th place per head of capita for road Fatalities out of 25 EU countries. In 2005 we had we had 399 road deaths. Now we have less, Every country above us in the List has road Infrastructure Immensely better than irelands (but we're comin on) meaning most of us drive on back arse roads most of the time and less of us crash. This logic would say we're one of the best drivers in europe (we're not). But As most posters Say we are far from the worst.

You know that RSA ad where it tells you when and how to indicate on roundabouts, well they should add to that what lane to use and who has the right of way.

The other week I was on the M4, driving just below the limit when I approached 2 cars doing about 80kph. I indicated to overtake them and pulled into the overtaking lane. Suddenly, the 2nd car pulled out in front of me with no indication and I had to slam on the brakes. I flashed and beeped him for a second to let him know that he did wrong. Anyway, after overtaking the first car, he pulled back into the left lane, with no indication and I proceeded to pass him in the overtaking lane. As I passed and moved into the left lane, he beeped and flashed me and then waved 'hello' style. Fantastic stuff!

They are pure lunatics in Rome!
All very macho, blowing their horns while stopped in heavy traffic. It doesn't change anything except vent frustration I suppose

Driving is very calm in Ireland in comparison

And I know Ireland is colder but most bikers wear more safety gear in Ireland . The gear of choice in Rome for a scooter seems to be jeans and a T shirt.
Some nasty road rash for sure
