I have a meteor mobile broadband dongle that works fine in windows. However it doesn't even show up in linux. Anyone have any ideas on how to get this thing working in linux?

And one more thing, every time I open the meteor connection application in windows it asks me for my pin. I dont see any settings to make it remember the pin, so any ideas how I can make it remember it as it starting to really piss me off having to type in a pin every time I want to connect to the net.

You'll need to know the exact model of the modem and see if it's supported by your Linux OS. Some are, some may not be.

Disable the PIN in the connection software, you can't get it to remember it. There should be an option to disable the SIM PIN though.

This modem is some piece of ****. There is no option in it's preferences to turn off the PIN.

If you have a meteor or unlocked phone you should be able to put the sim card in that and disable the PIN that way. That being said I'd be very surprised if there wasn't an option to disable the PIN code in the application somewhere.

It's in the software, not the modem. I've never seen a mobile connect software that doesn't have this option.

Google the distribution of Linux and the model of modem (or similar ones) and you will find complete information. USB modems are really high speed "serial" modems over USB. So the "modem" part will be a USB serial device in /dev in Linux. Many Modems have storage (To distribute windows driver), that will appear as a storage device. Ignore that.

There are Linux app to disable PIN, but it can be done once and for all in Windows, but only if the SIM is in and Modem "installed". All Windows Modem management tools have Disable PIN option. The modems are almost unusable without doing it. Unlike a phone, more important is the PC/Laptop physical & password security, not the SIM/Network security.

Ive tried the gf's Three mobile broadband dongle and I can get it to work in linux. Its a Huawei E1550.

What is the story with these usb modems, is her modem locked to Three or can I just stick my meteor sim in it and use it to connect to meteor?

The modems are normally locked to their network, just like a phone.
