I'm looking to get some indication of the cost of private violin lessons. How much per hour would be normal?

It depends on your area and the teacher. A teacher starting out is probably going to be cheaper than an established one who may have a waiting list.
Most private music teachers I know who teach one to one do so in half hour lessons. I think an hour is too long especially if you are just starting out. I'd expect 10-20 Euro per lesson, maybe more in the Dublin area.
Group lessons will be cheaper and maybe by the hour but one on one is the way to go
