You could do an entire article where Retr0 is quoted saying nice things about games he professes to hate!
And, perhaps, bad things about games he loves!
    Could be a winner!

Just spent the last few hours getting soaked going to and from college, but I took the opportunity to try think of a few articles I could write, would anyone find any of these particularly interesting?

N64 retrospective, been playing it a lot lately but maybe its too new?

16-bit console wars. charting the battle for supremacy of the market between Nintendo and Sega

The rise and fall of Sonic the Hedgehog

Metroid Retrospective again, been playing a fair bit of metroid recently, probably could go as far as the Gamecube on this one.

History of multiplayer games, I guess up to N64 having 4 control pad ports as a sort of pinnacle. Then briefly cover online stuff appearing with the Dreamcast and on PC.

What would you be looking for on wordcount? For each type of article, full, review, etc?

Oh and I'd be happy enough to do some editing for anyone who needs/wants it, might make up for my complete lack of skills with adobe whatchamacallit.

All of those suggestions are going to take an awful amount of work if you want them to be accurate. Also N64 with 4 controller ports being a pinnacle? I was playing Quake online a few years before it which was a bigger step. N64merely made it a bit more successful.

I meant pinnacle for consoles and local multiplayer, online is a far different beast as far as I'm concerned, and would need an article of its own. I probably shouldn't have mentioned the PC at all, but I was just throwing out ideas and not really stopping to think. So... history of CONSOLE multiplayer :D

Point taken about the research, but if this is going to actually go anywhere, someone had to offer :p

Well if you willing to do the research, personally I'd liek to see the rise and fall of sonic the hedgehog.

As far as word count goes? Dont really know, 1200 to 1500 for a full article?

Word count really doesn't matter as long as it's good. When I was helping Game.ie get off the ground we had a word count that meant we wrote long detailed reviews but it's been cut since then significantly. You don't want the articles ending up being boring. You can fill out short reviews with screenies.

Saying that I'd love to do an FF7 retrospective!

Cool, sure we say theres no word count? just whatever the writer feels comfortable with.

    Master of the Universe

It would be interesting to see if there's anything new we can add to the mix from an Irish perspective. I haven't ever read anything about gaming in Ireland really. 16 bit wars would be interesting, but 16 bit wars in the Irish market would be MORE interesting.

Even an article about the rise of classic gaming in Ireland.

Although that kind of thing would take a lot more research.

That type of information would be very hard to track down if it even exists. Ireland like europe was still a cluster**** of consoles, PCs and home computing in that era.

I'm doing that piece on the GAA games for HG101 soon and will be adding a bit about Sonys dominance during the PS1 and PS2 era in ireland.

Thinking about doing an article on the history of Mortal Kombat games. The main seres really, with only a brief mention of the 3 spin off games.

    What do ye think?

Should I talk about the films and cartoons aswell or just mention them?

As long as you mention how god awful they are!

Most articles on retrogamer and HG101 usually have a small section for any film or cartoon spin-offs. Nothing more than a few sentences about them.

oh no im going to compare MK to street fighter and every fighting series in the world and proclaim how it is the greastist game series of all time

and at the end i'll put a note: "inspired be Retr0gamer, thanks dude!"

But seriously, thanks for the info, might put them in a little feature box beside the review, just to mention them because as video game films go the first one isnt the worst

Feaature bos would be the way to go. I actually did enjoy the first Mortal Kombat film. The game is a bad B-game but it's knowingly so, it's kind of hard to give out about it as a result. The film similarly knows it's got a terrible story and low budget but the fight scenes were damn entertaining which is all I wanted from an MK movie.

Exactly, I dont think anyone will argue the MK had a very shallow fighting system and it by no means perfect. But yet its still really fun to play. Same with MK II, to this day i can still play it with someone and have fun. MK 3 is when thing started to change mainly with running and combos etc

I'm looking forward to the new game because the juggle combo system from MK2 is back and improved. MK2 was definitely the best. The dial-a-combos from MK3 onwards ruined the series.

I think thats why everyone is looking foward to the new game.

I tihnk its basically going to be MK II HD REMIX

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,289 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

The developers are saying they are designing it to be a tournament level fighter. I have my doubts but i'd be very happy to be pleasantly surprised.

You going to cover all the games? The two spin-offs are ****ing atrocious and there's also a not so bad game.com version of UMK3 :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,798 ✭✭✭Jack burton

Well I'll do the main series, more detail from MK 1 - 4 though and not so much detail on Deadly Allience onwards. I'd like to talk about the arcade releases of the games and then the home console ports for each game

3 spin off games, MK special forces on the PS1 aswell, dont worry its still really bad, again i might mention the 3 of them in a box on the side

Hey, I can save time and do a two word review of the MK series, paraphrasing Spinal Tap...

    "Sh1te Sandwich"

There, now we can move on to the great games....
Like Street of Rage and Goldenaxe!

I would love to see a beginners guide to Street Fighter, from II onwards, allowing complete idiots, like myself, to gain some foothold in it's nuances and bewildering depth, quarter circle where did you say? A back then hold then forward to do what exactly?
It would be nice to see, especially when most pieces done on SS tends to be historical records rather than an idiots guide to it. (Seriously and all jokes aside about this one, I really want to know how to play it against anything better than an AI set to moron)

A guide on how to play street fighter?

Dave Sirlin is by far the best one and it's where me and all the fighting game forum regulars started:

    http://www.sirlin.net/blog/2006/11/15/street-fighter-tutorial-videos.html

All capcom games follow these basics and only add a small but to the mechanics.

I'd a few articles I did for the gaming blog over on p45 a few years back , I'll have a root and see what I can find.Failing that i was planning something on Legacy of Kain....
