Is there support for that yet in linux? been googling but it's hard to get anything that isn't ancient news. Running Ubuntu 10.04 but I'd be willing to upgrade for that.

    edit: /boot is raid 1

I got impatient and just went ahead and tried it. Seems to be working. :)

Yep, I have md raid 5 running on my Ubuntu server.

I had a bit of a messy migration from raid 1 with 2 disks to raid 5 with 3. Degraded the raid 1, then built a degraded raid 5 with the other 2, rsync'd then added the degraded raid 1 disk to the raid 5 and let it rebuild. It's in the middle of doing that now. Performance seems a bit dodge to be honest, but I'll see what it's like when it's finished.

Well, if it's rebuilding, of course the performance is going to be dodgy, as all the 3 drives are working. :)

/ on raid 5 is not an issue, however having /boot on there might (you need to use superblocks version 0.90 if using GRUB legacy, for example)

    Cheers

Nah, it was a dog while it was degraded (before I started the rebuild...actually it was performing better while rebuilding).

It's very fast now. 150MB/s. Zing!
