Just reading some reviews online and I was wondering if anyone here would like to give a Retro gaming e-zine a go.

Even just a once off one would be pretty interesting to do, have different board members review a game, do a feature on modding a particular console, give tips on games or anything retro related even.

I think it would be pretty good if it was done like the magezines used to be ages ago, like http://www.meanmachinesmag.co.uk/media_view/147/mega-cd-vs-snes.php but with a tiny bit more stlye

So what do ye think? or am I just pissing against the wind?

am I just pissing against the wind?

Don't do that, you'll destroy your good slacks, and the slacks of anyone behind you, although if you're pissing out doors with someone standing behind you, you may have more troubles, or certainly made a life style choice, than I can help you with!

    Hello,

I know I don't post in this forum too often but I think that could a very good idea. Personally I don't know anything about console modding and I do like reading reviews of older games online so straight off I'd be an interested reader.

On top of that I also know my way around Adobe InDesign...

I think it would be interesting, especially if the whole community contributed a little piece on a game(s) they are very interested in.

I nominate Ciderman for a Streets of Rage, Final Fight, Simpsons arcade and Gunstar Heroes retrospective.

I'd be interested in reading it as well, sounds like a great idea. Some really knowledgable people here so I'd say it'd be interesting.

I'd be happy enough to help you out with some content, I'm already doing a bit for another site but if its only a once off or monthly thing I could write something up. I've only been writing about games for a little while mind, so I won't be upset if you say no :P

Either way, I'd like to read it if you get it together.

Well glad to see people are interested in this.

like I james up there I too know my way around the adobe programmes.....so that side of it would be covered

    No worries man.
I would be very interested in this as either a reader or contributor (or both) so if you think you would need a second person for help with graphic design just drop me a pm.

I made suggestion similar to this to one of the mods in January 2010, around the time of the voting for game of the decade. I proposed the idea of a boards.ie game of the decade e-zine but that pretty much died.

This retro e-zine however I think could be successful. From reading posts in this section a lot of the contributors do appear to be very knowledgeable about the subject material so their opinions should make for good reading.

Ah yeah of corse a hand with the graphic design would be really apreciated.

How many articles would be needed? between reviews and sh1t would 10 be reasonible number? I have no realy idea, would there be 10 people interested in doing this?

I'd like to contribute to this too.

I'm not as up with graphic tools as I should be (my Wacom tablet hasn't come out in a very long time), but 6 years of art college and a fine art degree has given me a pretty good eye when it comes to what looks **** and what doesn't look ****. So if you want a second opinion on layouts and how it looks overall, give me a shout. I'll happily throw a multitude of ideas your way.

I'd be interested in writing too.

Who knows, could get Ireland's version of Retrogamer out of this :pac:

I'd be interested myself, don't have any experience with writing games-related articles, but would be interested in giving it a shot.

Big articles would require a lot of work and research really. You'll be better off with two or three of them if anyone can dedicate the time to write them and then shorter articles perhaps on single games which are easier to do and means we can include people that want to contribute but can't write multipage articles.

Fantastic idea, id love to contribute but my writing skills are appaling! Still love to read though, a bit of C64 and SNES heaven :)

I could make an attempt at some arcade game reviews or some such. I have obbessed about a few over the years!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,599 ✭✭✭James Howlett

Regarding the amount of content required I think it would depend on how often you want to produce an e-zine; Monthly? Quarterly to start off with? Also the length of articles/ features/ reviews. For example if I were to do a review I would happily write for two A4 pages (not completely text, include screen-shots as well.)

I’d say this is the kind of thing that would gain speed as it progressed so a handful of contributors at the start could blossom into much more as these are produced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,798 ✭✭✭Jack burton

Yeah sounds good, But what Retr0 was saying would be the best way, 2 or 3 full researched articles with some shorter game reviews and such.

I'd do a full article, anyone else be willing to put the effort into one of those?

Id say go for 1 issue and see what the feedback is like and then move up to quartly if people want to go ahead with this

Well so far heres a list of people who would be interested

    Jack Burton
    James Howlett
    landsleaving
    o1s1n
    ghostchant
    Retr0gamer?
    LoGiE
xp90, dont matter about the writing skills, you could do a paragraph of trivia or somthing like that

    Is that right?

Sure let me know here what you'd be interested in doing

Should it be a themed issue or just random retro articles? Also what do we constitute as retro? I think we should go up as far as and include PS2, 360 and Xbox but keep a good mix of consoles and generations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,798 ✭✭✭Jack burton

Yeah see if we did this earlier we could do a Haloween themed one :P

I dunno, mabye keep it kind of random for the moment, dont want to be putting everyone into a box.

I would say include PS2 and Xbox, what does everyone else think?

I wouldn't go past the PS2 and XBOX otherwise you run the risk of losing the niche area you are targeting.

If you want to focus on retro would it be helpful to set a boundry now? As in games released by 2000 or something similar?

Well I'd rather see people writing about games up to the 32-bit generation, but if someone wanted to write a review of a ps2 game I'd happily read it.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,380 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I think when when choose something from the PS2, Xbox or GC era it's got to be a niche game or else part of a bigger article.

Anyway I've been planning on writing articles on my blog for Forbidden Siren, Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2 but haven't had the time yet and also coming very close to the end of shin megami tensei so can write about that. What about screen caps? We just going to rob unwatermarked shots from google images for the games we can't screencap. Also don't mind you posting anything I've written before like the thief and mother articles although they probably need editing and be less gushing because I wrote them without editting them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 660 ✭✭✭NeoKubrick

I have an old Morrowind article you can use (I'll edit it a bit). I would like to contribute, but I'm busy with coursework up until mid-December.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

I'd be willing to do a full article, just let me know what kind of topics you'd like and I can work from there. Or if its completely random I'll just throw a few ideas out and see what everyone is most interested in.

I will add that I can only write, I'm useless with anything for adding pictures and layouts. I can try, but someone who knows what they're doing might help me out on that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,798 ✭✭✭Jack burton

Well if i were to put down markers I'd say go up to and including PS1 etc and talk about the PS2, Xbox and GC only if its a part of a larger article, like a retrospective or somthing.

Well screenshots for most games would be handy with emulation etc but for some games I wouldnt have a problem using images off the internet. as long as they are good quality, but the images for an article would be small on the page so id say it would work

So with NeoKubrik on board thats 9 we have wo would add somthing to this?

I'm thinking a two page article on that overlooked gem, Robocop versus the Terminator. It'll even have a quote from Retr0-

'When asked about RVT's high level of production, boards.ie's resident Games forum moderator had nothing but praise -

'The game has a really impressive soundtrack. I was quite taken aback by the quality of the vocal samples.'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,798 ✭✭✭Jack burton

id say we can do a 2 page spread with just that quote

I also remember another one in which he said that Donkey Kong Country wasn't actually as bad as he thought. Augmerson should remember that one, he wouldn't let it go :pac:

DKC isn't bad, just a bit uninspired really. RvT had the Tommy Tellerico soundtrack going for it and not much else really.
