Hey guys long time windows user here who has dabbled with OSX etc what i'm trying to get accross is I know my way around a computer.

After much pressure from my dear friend and a bit of trial and error I have finally moved onto the Linux Mint 10. I have been up all night playing with it liking what I see it runs like a dream on my Asus UL30 and I honestly believe Windows 7 shall be my fallback OS from now on. (score one for OSS :))

My question is what cool Sh**/educational stuff should I be trying out as a new Linux user I've been experimenting a bit with the terminal etc but would love some tips and shall reward all with imaginary sandwiches.

    Cheers

This is a common question, people shift to linux and want to know what cool stuff it does. Well Linux doesn't do a whole lot cool (it is an operating system after all), the cool thing it does is let you do other cool thinks a whole lot better than other operating systems like Windows. :D

one cool thing you could start doing which is much easier on Linux is messing around with computer programming (I recommend Python to start off with)

another cool thing is to mess around with say starting a web site and understanding how that works (check out Apache).

You will find a whole lot of more advanced computer concepts and tools that you would think I'm not going near that stuff on Windows actually turns out to be interesting and easy in Linux.

BlueProximity was a cool thing I was messing around with a while ago, needs bluetooth on your computer and phone though.
"It does so by detecting one of your bluetooth devices, most likely your mobile phone, and keeping track of its distance. If you move away from your computer and the distance is above a certain level (no measurement in meters is possible) for a given time, it automatically locks your desktop (or starts any other shell command you want).

Once away your computer awaits its master back - if you are nearer than a given level for a set time your computer unlocks magically without any interaction (or starts any other shell command you want)."

Virtual machines are also good but they can be run on most OS's

No start downloading all those other ISOs of Linux distros and have a look at them too ...... great fun to see the differences and begin to lear a little about why. :D
