If it was possible for evry working person in the country to pay 60 that would create the 15 billion the government are trying to find in the budget. Im no expert and it probably wouldnt even be possible...but I would gladly give them 60 than face all these massives cuts in the next 4 budgets and would that not make us the owners of the state and give us a greater ability to have a say in how the country is run

I cant figure out how to delete this thread but yes I made a mistake with how 15 bn was actually written I worked off 150m instead so scrap it completely

    your maths is all wrong

    1,859,500 people in employment * 60 = €111,570,000

yes 111 million is a much smaller number than 20,000 million :P

You mean some sort of... tax?

Maybe they could do this, but charge rich people more than the less well off?

I like where this is going actually.

Brian Lenihan is that you? Thinking like that would get you a job in the Department of Finance. The figure you propose is only out by a factor of about 150.

Debt per person is €20,305 per person, would you be willing to pay that?

my figures were based roughly on our last census that there is approx 2,907,533 people in the working age of 18-65 take away the 400,000 unemployed this would leave 2,507,533 X60 = 150,451,980

yes 111 million is a much smaller number than 20,000 million :P

and if this is the correct employment figure it would mean each employed person could pay 80 once and it would solve the situation

Think you'll find that's 150 million, not 15 billion that is needed.

Its a bit more than that:

~90 billion - national debt (see ntma site)
    ~95 billion - bank bailouts (s&p estimate)
~50 billion - needed between now and 2014 if the reduction targets are meant
~?? billion - cost of debt servicing

    that's what 230 billion debt by 2014?

that's 114K for each (currently) employed person

The only problem is then next year we still have to borrow another 18billion to pay for the governments spending vs its revenue

Just to clear this up once and for all

    1 Million = 1,000,000
    1 Billion = 1,000,000,000

We figure out why the banking crises is costing us more than €4.5bn and the cuts have doubled overnight.

Not 100% correct, depends on where in the world you are. Well thats not true anymore either, but 1 Billion used to be 1,000,000,000,000 but because of America it is now taken as 1,000,000,000. Or as yer man on Breakfast Newstalk calls it 1 Thousand Million, which is more correct

Ok, yeh you right not employed, pensioners and children will also be paying indirectly for this mess via reduced services.

Its also hard to pin down a right figure since the costs just keep on growing.
